"Only one period in history is immediately, indelibly and uniquely linked to the whole area of the Scottish and English Border country, and that is the time of the Reivers. Whenever anyone mentions 'Reiver', no-one hesitates to add 'Border'. It is an inextricable association, and rightly so. Nowhere else in Britain in the modern era, or indeed in Europe, did civil order break down over such a wide area, or for such a long time. For more than a century the hoof-beats of countless raiding parties drummed over the border. From Dumfriesshire to the high wastes of East Cumbria, from Roxburghshire to Redesdale, from the lonely valley of Liddesdale to the fortress city of Carlisle, swords and spears spoke while the law remained silent. Fierce family loyalty counted for everything while the rules of nationality counted for nothing. The whole range of the Cheviot Hills, its watershed ridges and the river valleys which flowed out of them became the landscape of larceny while Maxwells, Grahams, Fenwicks, Carletons, Armstrongs and Elliots rode hard and often for plunder. These were the Riding Times and in modern European history, they have no parallel. This book tells the remarkable story of the Reivers and how they made the Borders.". SIGNED COPY.

Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Book Club (BCE/BOMC). The Reivers: A Reminiscence, published in 1962, is the last novel by the American author William Faulkner. It was published a month before his death. The bestselling novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1963. This copy SIGNED BY FAULKNER is a bit of a mystery. In 1961, Faulkner began writing his nineteenth and final novel, The Reivers. On June 17, 1962, Faulkner suffered a serious injury in a fall from his horse, which led to thrombosis. He suffered a fatal heart attack on July 6, 1962, at the age of 64. This book club edition was published in early 1962 so would have been one of Faulkner's last published books to have been signed. Book Club edition in publisher's full red cloth, gilt lettering and facsimile signature on the front cover (and no gilt stamping or title on the spine!), gilt facsimile of author's signature on front cover, top edge light red, mustard-yellow endpapers, Book Club deboss marker on rear cover. Copyright page identical to the trade edition including "First Printing". Possibly an early trial run of the book club edition that would explain why the spine is unlettered? Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1963. An unusual, interesting, and maybe unique copy for the serious Faulkner collector. See all photos. Signed by Author.

Boards are covered in a clear plastic covering, have mild wear along the extremities, and mild fraying along the tail corners. Textblock has mild wear along the edges, moderate age-toning along the edges, stains along the head and tail edges, and faded red inking along the head edge. Signed flat by William Faulkner on publisher's limitation page, limited edition #203/500. DL consignment. Shelved Case 6. William Falkner was born September 25, 1897 in New Albany, Mississippi. Faulkner had an early interest in stories fostered by tales of his home in Mississippi and his family. Faulkner's surname would change from Falkner to Faulkner in 1918 after a typesetting error put "Faulkner" on his first book of poetry, a name he would use for the rest of his writing career. While many of his contemporaries came to live in Europe, Faulkner instead chose to remain in the US, moving to live in New Orleans in 1925. There Faulkner would write his first novel "Soldier's Pay", beginning a long career as one of America's most acclaimed novelists. In 1949 Faulkner would win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Faulkner's final novel was "The Reivers", published in 1962 just a month before his death in July of that year. It would go on to posthumously win the 1963 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, an award Faulkner had previously won for his novel "A Fable", marking him as one of only four authors to have won the award more than once. Though well-received upon release, "The Reivers" has earned the scorn of many Faulkner scholars who dismiss it as a lesser work for it's more straightforward narration and lighthearted tone, eschewing many of the traits that had made Faulkner so beloved. Despite these criticisms, the novel remains well-liked by general audiences, enough so to earn a movie adaptation of the same name in 1969, starring Steve McQueen. 1388969. Shelved Dupont Bookstore.
