"Percy's Reliques," as it is sometimes called for short, is a collection of ballads and popular songs collected by Bishop Thomas Percy and originally published in 1765. Ballad collections had appeared before but Percy's Reliques seemed to capture the public imagination like no other. Not only would it inspire poets such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth to compose their own literary ballads in imitation, it also made the collecting and study of oral poetry a popular pastime.…

First edition: one of the great antiquarian publications of the eighteenth century, breaking much new ground in an area of literature until then little noticed or understood. The origin of this collection was an old folio manuscript Percy found at the house of his friend Humphrey Pitt, at Shifnall, Shropshire. He mythologised the discovery as having been made when it was 'lying dirty on the floor being used by the maids to light the fire'. Whatever the precise truth, once he had salvaged it, Percy was assisted by Shenstone, Garrick, Goldsmith, and others in gathering related material, and the result was a book which for once can truthfully be described as 'important'. As the original DNB article put it, 'The book made an epoch in the history of English literature. It promoted with lasting effect the revival of interest in our older poetry.' The dedication to the Countess of Northumberland is signed with Percy's name, but was actually written by his friend Samuel Johnson. Fleeman 65.2PR/1; Courtney & Nichol Smith p. 111; Hazen pp. 158-68; Rothschild 1521. Provenance. Each title inscribed 'John Markland Junr'; and 'M. Entwisle 1818'. This is probably John Markland (1744-98), who inherited a house called Foxholes in Rochdale; he changed his name to Entwistle in 1787, as the house came to him through his grandmother Ellen Entwistle. He was vice president of the Manchester Humane Society, a JP and High Sheriff of Manchester. The volumes also have the later bookplates of George Montgomery Traherne (1826-96).…
