No Binding. Condition: Collectible-Fine. Original hand-drawn political cartoon by Dennis Renault for The Sacramento Bee newspaper. Signed "Renault" in black ink at the lower-left corner of the panel. Also inscribed in black ink at the upper-left corner is the following: "For Morgan - with Thanks for your good work!, Dennis R., 2/11/85." Original black ink and blue crayon on white paper with white pigment for original corrections and editing and screentone sheets for texture and shading. Original white piece of paper says, "Sacramento Bee," in the lower-left corner. February 11, 1985. 11" x 14." Art is very clean and intact with minimal age wear. Dennis Renault (b. 1936) was an American political cartoonist at The Sacramento Bee and other newspapers. Beginning in 1972, he worked for the McClatchy Company and was the political cartoonist for three of its newspapers, The Sacramento Bee, The Fresno Bee, and The Modesto Bee. Renault retired in 1998 and currently lives in Monterey County. Don Sebastiani (b. 1953) is a vintner and former California state assemblyman from Sonoma. He represented the 8th District from 1980-1986. After serving in the State Assembly, Sebastiani returned to Sonoma to run his family's wine business, Sebastiani Vineyards, which was established in 1904. In 2008, he sold Sebastiani Vineyards but had opened his own wine company with his sons, Donny and August, in 2001. Don Sebastiani & Sons still operates to this day under Sebastiani family ownership. This is a single-panel political cartoon that lampoons Sebastiani. He is identified with "Sebastiani" on his suit jacket. It shows him rummaging through trash in a back alley and retrieving one of his finds, a bottle of an alcoholic beverage with a label that says, "State Reapportionment." Sebastiani exclaims, "Ah, my favorite brand!," which is shown as a caption at the bottom. The bottle and caption could refer to Sebastiani's connection with the wine industry, but the critique seems to be strictly about his policies in office. Sebastiani was a Republican politician. This cartoon refers to his state reapportionment initiative that would have redrawn district lines to benefit Republican politicians and potentially give them control of Congress. However, the California Supreme Court struck down the initiative before it could reach voters deeming it unconstitutional under the rule that only one reapportionment is allowed per decade after the federal census. Art is very clean and intact with minimal age wear. This is a single-panel comic. The panel (no demarcated borders) shows an older man in a white robe holding a scythe in one hand and an hourglass with "1982" on it in the other. He has a worried look on his face and says, "I've been dreading this day!," as a robot tugs at the hem of his robe with "1983" on its chest proclaiming, "Beep! Hello, Beep, Beep, I am Baby New Year, Beep, Beep, 1983, Beep!" Words spoken by the robot are formed by original stickers pasted on the panel. Add to basketNo binding. Condition: Very Good. 450 x 900 mm., (paper size), hand coloured pochoir print, in good condition. A superb pochoir print celebrating one of the earliest meets especially for seaplanes held at Deauville, Normandy, between 25-29 August 1913. The latest race in the air was the development of an aircraft capable of taking off and landing on water. The aircraft was manufactured by the Farman brothers, specifically Maurice Farman (1877-1964). He began racing cars but soon turned to aircraft in 1908 when he purchased a biplane. He set endurance and speed records the following year and along with his brothers Richard and Henry began building them commercially. The Deauville meet struggled with poor weather. As the title states "The Renault engine leads to victory for Mr. Farman's aircraft." No such victory is recorded but most likely it refers to the capabilities it showed. Its pilot at the event was Eugene Renaux. The artist is Marguerite Millet (1883-1949) who signed as 'Gamy' which is an anagram of Magy. She was the wife of Ernest Montaut (1878-1909), both of whom were accomplished artists. He is one of the most famous of the early illustrators of motor sports. He was born in Montauban, north of Toulouse, into an era in France where the motor car was beginning to catch the public imagination. Until Montaut, there had been no artist of motor racing. The cars had developed into large machines with big engines and were now being raced town to town on roads rutted by horse and cart. The thrill of these roaring down the road was captured best by Montaut, who began in 1897 to chronicle these races in art. He drew upon the poster art of the period produced by the likes of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) and Jules Cheret (1836-1932). 'His lighting can be Impressionist, his trees, swaying to the passage of a car, take on Symbolist curves. He is not afraid to colour like a Fauve' (Tubbs). He is credited with inventing two artistic methods to illustrate speed amongst others. The use of speed lines to indicate movement, the bending of the foreground of the car all help to project the feeling of speed and power. It was however Diego Velasquez who first blurred spinning wheels in a painting entitled 'The Spinners' from 1657! He drew directly on stone from which each print was made. Then followed the extensive hand coloured process using several stencils elaborately cut for each image, one for each colour. This is a process known as pochoir, a forerunner of the modern silk-screening process. As demand grew, he took on more staff eventually employing about a dozen to do the colouring alone. The motor car industry was booming, and his posters were used to decorate showrooms to encourage sales. Note the reference here to a Bosch magneto, Claudel carburettor, and Arecal GA radiator. He was not only known for motor cars, but his posters depicted other motorised machines, especially aeroplanes, another recent invention, along with dirigibles and motorboats. His earliest posters date from the late 1890s but the glory period is the early 1900s leading up to his tragic death in August 1909 from appendicitis. His wife continued the business. Indeed, dated 1909, this is one of her earliest productions just weeks after her husband's death, and even less time after the flight itself. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Tennis. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she also used the name "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring.
