Binding tight, square, everything intact. Title page dated 1833. 584 pages. Final page is the index entry for the W's. If there were once a page with XYZ's, it is missing. The first 280 pages are printed on different quality paper than the final 300 pages. It toned more towards brown and gives the volume the appearance of being two volumes bound together into one. Early ownership name on the front free endpaper of Lewis A. Boggs. July 1837. Boggs was the Chief Justice of Spotsylvania County VA, owner of the 2000 acre plantation called Livingston. Plain brown sheepskin with maroon title label on the spine (Revised Code of 1819) and gold ruling on the spines. Volume 1 has a black leather label with Meredith & Cocke in gold. Volume II has the name Meredith stamped in gold. Both volumes have been professionally and excellently rebacked, with a partial inch of new leather visible at crowns of spines. Binding good and tight, leather not perfect (age), but still supple and well taken care of. 5.5 x 9 inches. Volume 1 has small booksellers slug from Frederick Mayo Stationer, Richmond, on inside front cover & the name J. Preston Cocke signed in pencil, dated 1877. 634 pages. Foxed, index leaves browned. Good to Good+. The new Acts include a detailed Code restricting the rights of slaves and Free Negroes, passed after the Nat Turner insurrection. The laws prohibit their religious instruction, except upon permission of their ministers, and then only by white preachers; bar their owning or keeping weapons or ammunition, or distributing liquor; prescribe the punishment of death "without benefit of clergy" for assaulting a white person with intent to kill; bar assemblies "by free negroes or mulattoes," as well as slaves.
