Hardcover. Condition: Used - fair. 8vo. Copy no. 327 of 400 for the American market, the limitation notice bound in at half-title. Most probably a binder's copy. The textblock square, tight, and exceptionally clean, albeit with faint offsetting of illustrations to tissue guards. The spine is the real problem; apparently exposed to too much sunbathing, which has made the leather brittle and splotchy, with many chips and tears and the loss of 4 gilt letters. The red cloth boards are also moderately rubbed, corners frayed, showing boards.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1860 BEAUTIFUL Reynard the Fox Fairy Tale Reineke Fuchs Goethe Illustrated RARE Reynard the Fox has been a staple of fairy tale lore for centuries, with many countries, such as Germany, France, and other Low Countries, claiming the honor of his 'birth-place.' Told as a brute-epic, this tale of cunning mischief was finally written and printed during the late 15th- and early 16th-centuries. In fact, some scholars believe the origins of Reynard to have come from the 9th-century! Thomas James Arnold was a barrister and writer, best known for his translations from Goethe and the classics. This 19th-century English edition of 'Reynard the Fox' is a translation of Geothe's Reineke Fuchs, which was based upon Gottsched's prose version of the Low German poem Reinke de Vos which includes numerous illustrations by the famous Wilhelm Von Kaulbach and Joseph Wolf.
