Manuscript medical remedy book from Devonport, England. Inscribed dates ranging from 1906-1915. Written in ink with a legible hand across 36 pages in a ruled notebook measuring 7.75" x 6.5". Original black binding, Accompanied by three paper ephemera inserts, an index of herbs and chemicals, and two recipes, one of which has a postage stamp from the the "Plymouth. Society, Dispensing Dept., Fore St., Devonport". A compelling manuscript recipe book captures the daily pharmacological practices of a dispenser or home caretaker working in Devonport. The book is composed almost entirely of medical formulas-written in clean, careful script-prescribing treatments for dozens of common and serious ailments. Among the conditions listed are colds, influenza, bronchitis, heart disease, neuralgia, muscular rheumatism, indigestion, winter cough, sore throat, diarrhea, and deep ulcers. Several entries are devoted to mixtures intended for children, with dosages differentiated by age. Others include treatments for eye complaints, tonic and "strengthening" mixtures, and various lotions for skin conditions or slow-healing wounds. A handful of entries are dated, with the earliest reading "June 29, 1903," and one is attributed to a source or individual named A. Wilson.+ Interestingly, this document demonstrates the blend of folk practice and professionalized pharmacy, which was still emerging. Remedies for internal use sit beside external applications, and familiar domestic ingredients like witch hazel or paregoric are listed alongside then-common pharmaceutical compounds that would be restricted or banned by mid-century. The overall character of the notebook suggests it was compiled by someone with regular access to a dispensary, but not necessarily a licensed pharmacist, possibly an informal practitioner operating at the intersection of domestic health and early 20th-century industrialized medicine. Well rubbed with losses to spine and extremities; interior is clear and legible with minor foxing. Good condition overall. Signed.
