Paperback. vi, 234p., softbound first edition in 9x6 inch wraps decorated in colors by Richard-Olivier Marius. Cover slightly marred by a food droplet (it didn't erase but we tried), general light dust-soil and a pencil stroke to spine panel, a good copy without further damage to interior, which author Thompson has inscribed affectionately on half-title, signing "Gordon" Both Thompson and Stepto are Yalies and African American. At writing, Stepto had remained at Yale as professor, Thompson was teaching at CUNY. NOTE, ISBN 9780773415553 is noted on the copyright page as "Hardcover" This is not. To further complicate the matter, on-line databases incorrectly associate this number with the image of the book "Assimilation in American Life" by Gordon M. Milton. Suffice to say care should be taken when purchasing this title.

One page, 7.75 x 5.25, 25-line typed note, some soiling and toning and edge-wear, with pencil annotations at top. BOLDLY SIGNED AT BOTTOM BY AUTHOR RICHARD WRIGHT. Wright asks for return of "one square, flat box containing six photograph records. . . " and ". . . Eight (8) cartons of Camel cigarettes!" that had each been tagged: "Richard Wright, c/o Gertrude Stein, 5 rue Christine, Paris, France." "If seen, please take to Purser's Office." This was Wright's famous trip to France; he stayed in france, and became a citizen soon after. And, Stein was to pass away that year. In biographies of Wright, it is said that he met with African American soldiers on the ship who were not allowed to mix with the white soldiers; but the European travelers aboard treated the African-American soldiers better.

Unbound. Condition: Near Fine. Glossy gelatin silver photograph. Measures approximately 3.75" x 5.5". Undated but circa 1946 (there is some evidence the photo was used to promote the film made from his novel *Black Boy*). Unprinted verso of photograph has a small photo processing rubberstamp ("046A"). The photograph is in near fine condition, with nice contrast to the photograph image. Formal portrait of Wright wearing a dark suit photographed from the chest up with hands folded in foreground, with head facing slightly to the side. Signed by Wright in blue ink, diagonally across the lower portion of the photograph. The signature has light skipping of the pen at the start of the letter "R" in "Richard" (only). The full signature is legible, but the later part of the signature is slightly obscured by the pattern of his jacket. Signed photographs of Wright are uncommon.
