Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The author inscribed and dated this volume, 1968, on the front free end paper in ink. This is a First Edition with the "A" designation on the copyright page. The boards are purple-blue cloth with silver lettering on the spine and front board. There is a bit of discoloration to the edges of the board, they are a bit pink-reddish, and spine. The top spine end is stiff while the bottom is a a bit soft. The corners have a slight bump and wear. There are no ink marks, marginalia or highlights to the text pages. Pages 129, 130, 143 and 145 have one brown spot on each page. There appears to be light toning to the page edges, and the cover of the dust jacket. The dust wrapper has small areas of paper loss, a few tears, and spots of color loss. The dust jacket is not price clipped and the image on the front cover has the name "gill" on the lower left part of the image in white lettering-the same as the title and the author's name. A little scratched and creased with some small amount of tearing and paper loss, mainly on the spine. The original price of $2.75 is present on the front flap. Small stains on the back flap and on the author's biography on the back cover. The book is in very good plus condition. The boards are a little sunned and faded, more so on the back board and the spine than the front. The silver lettering on the spine and front board is well-preserved. Very little shelf wear to the spine, with no bumping and only slight scuffing on the corners.A previous owner's signature is at the top of the front endpaper. The author's signature is below that in black ink, with what appears to read "N.Y.U. 1955" below. Two miniscule foxing stains on the fore-edge. The text block is toned but bright, clean, and complete. The binding is sound.
