Loose Leaf. Condition: Good. Lot of two loose sheets, each containing a poem: 'I Have Lighted the Candles, Mary' (1942) and 'Before the Bells of This New Year Ring' (1967). 'Candles' is inscribed by Patchen on the reverse, in very good condition, showing minimal toning and wear; quarter crease through the center. 'Before the Bells' is heavily age toned to the edges, also shows quarter creases through center. Prior owner at one point taped the bottom and top edges, which left 1- to 2-inch stains in two places. Overall, sheets are intact and in good condition. Signed.

Subtle age-darkening to image area evident upon lifting the mat, else quite clean, and a strong impression. Edition size not stated. A finely detailed woodcut, inspired by the traditional African-American spiritual of the same title. Henrich, born in Nova Scotia, worked for most of her long career in western New York, exhibiting widely in and around Buffalo, with long stretches as an educator at the Art Institute of Buffalo and the Buffalo Seminary. Though best known for her works in watercolor, she also excelled as a printmaker and sculptor. Signed.
