BE6 - A tight, clean, sound copy with very minor overall shelf wear plus some very light bumping at the top right corners plus there is a remainder mark on the bottom outside paper edges. The dust jacket shows only very minor overall shelf wear mainly in the form of some very light overall rubbing plus some very, very light edge wear along the top and bottom edges plus there is a small (about 0.5") closed tear on the back at the top left corner. A young American couple arrive from San Francisco prompted by the woman's dying uncle's desire to complete his memoirs. He was an engineer and the trail leads them to the forested edge of a sprawling savanna in Central Africa. There they share only a hint of common language with the local population but they take jobs there and adapt themselves to a culture where people live without expectations. They pursue the uncle's past and discover that he may be the almost mythical Road Builder, a mysterious figure with a colonial connection which makes their situation a little dangerous. In the end they are able to establish themselves there relying on goodwill and friendship and achieve the completion of sorts, in their lives and in their new relationship with Africa. The author was a Peace Corps volunteer in Zaire in the 1980s. 520p. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Remainder.
