First edition of this vivid tale of bushranging, well-preserved in the vibrant original cloth. Boldrewood's book contains "the first thoroughly Australian characters in fiction" (ANB) and is particularly praised for its authentic rendition of outback speech. Robbery Under Arms traces the robberies, gambling, and cattle rustling…of Captain Starlight, a renegade bushranger from an aristocratic English family. Amid the goldfields and bush of 1850s Australia, the two Marston brothers are swept into Starlight's adventures, with tragic consequences. Robbery Under Arms won Browne complimentary visits from Mark Twain and H. Rider Haggard, among others. Thomas Alexander Browne (1826-1915) wrote 16 novels under the pseudonym "Rolf Boldrewood", many of which were "praised for the authenticity of their scenes of life in the bush, their convincing rendition of Australian speech and character, and their lively evocation of recent historical events" (ODNB). Browne moved to Australia as a child and worked as a police magistrate and goldfields commissioner in the South-eastern territories. A newspaper clipping from 30 November 1900, exploring the origin of Captain Starlight, is loosely laid in. Provenance: Walter B. Paton (1853-1937), with his July 1890 ownership signature on the half-title. Paton, a barrister, wrote several guidebooks for emigrants to British colonies, including the South Australia handbook, with map (1908). Further down the half-title is the signature of Paton's son Victor Alexander Loftus (b. 1899), dated 11 February 1937. Sadler 261; Woolf 586. 3 vols, octavo. Original green cloth, spines lettered in gilt, front cover with blocked floral decoration in black, printed light green floral endpapers. Short pencil inscriptions to pages 2 and 291 of vol. III, reading "June 1936" and "Finished 3rd vol only 15 June 1936" respectively. Vols I & II recased, gatherings H & I of vol. III reattached. Cloth bright, light bumping and rubbing, slight lean to spines, minor separation between and within various gatherings, contents generally fresh, infrequent spots of browning: a very good copy.
