Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. In the fall of 1991 Roger de la Burdé held an exhibition of some of his art collection at Virginia Commonwealth University's School of the Arts, Anderson Gallery. This is the published catalog for the exhibit, titled "Private Stories, Selections from the de la Burdé Collection". The exhibit featured the paintings of Michael Goldberg, Rainer Gross, Jay Milder, and Jeff Way, and was was held from August 23 to October 20, 1991. A typed letter from Roger de la Burdé to a potential patron, dated September 1991, is signed in black ink by Burdé. . The de la Burdé story , itself, became anything but private, when in March of 1992 he was found dead from a bullet wound to the head. Roger de la Burdé was a controversial person, hailing from Poland, who styled himself a count. He owned considerable collections of art, focusing on African Art and Modern Art. The catalog here presented is of Contemporary Art, and has striking color reproductions of the paintings. The letter, signed by Burdé in ink, was found pressed between the leaves of the catalog, and is addressed to a potential patron of the arts and typed on his personal stationery, which has printed at the top, Roger Z. Cte de la Burdé, Windsor, Powhatan, Virginia. The letter is dated September 12, 1991. CONDITION -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted :: -- Interior is clean and unmarked; there is fading along spine fold and edge - most extensive on rear cover; a small impact dent on the front cover is barely perceptible, but has extended through all the pages in a slightly more obvious manner - this is not so egregious and displays on the interior as a small dent and surface wrinkle. The letter is pristine.

AN EXCEPTIONAL COPY, WITH TWO UNIQUE AND IMPORTANT LETTERS CITED IN THE STANDARD OLYMPIA PRESS BIBLIOGRAPHY. One of 2,000 copies of the first British edition. (Actually this "British edition" was created by taking 2,000 copies of the first American (Grove Press) edition to England, putting a sticker over the imprint, and issuing a new dustjacket.) LAID IN ARE TWO EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TYPED LETTERS SIGNED--ABOUT 1,000 WORDS--FROM THE EDITOR, SINGLETON-GATES, on his letterhead, to a correspondent in Nothern Rhodesia (later Zambia) (!). In these unpublished letters, written during the 1960s, Singleton-Gates describes his feelings towards Casement. He also describes, in passionate terms, the fascinating circumstances surrounding the publication of these scandalous diaries, and the numerous obstacles he faced, including copyright and censorship issues. He furthermore explains his various other projects relating to Casement, none of which came to fruition. It is fair to say that these letters shed considerable light on the limits of press freedoms in Britain during the late 50s and 60s, as well as on the way Casement's heirs felt about his legacy. THESE LETTERS ARE CITED--and briefly excerpted--on pp. 60-61 of Patrick Kearney's bibliography, The Paris Olympia Press (Liverpool, Liverpool University Press, 2007). Also laid in are numerous newspaper clippings from 1959 and 1960, all relating to the publication. 4to. Publisher's cloth. Fine and bright, in a very good price-clipped dj.
