La cassette audio (nom de code K7) rencontra rapidement un énorme succès car elle est simple à utiliser et nomade par vocation. Déclinée au fil des années pour tous les types d'appareils, la géniale K7 connut son apogée en 1979 avec l'invention du baladeur cassette, du Walkman par Sony. La commercialisation la même année du compact disc causa pourtant sa perte. En peu de temps, le CD va remplacer la bande magnétique sous toutes ses formes, ainsi que le disque vinyle qui restait la référence en termes audiophiles. Dans le domaine de la vidéo domestique, la bande VHS (Video Home System) subit le même traitement après l'invention du DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) en 1995. L'invention de la photographie, sans cesse renouvelée depuis la vue de la fenêtre du domaine du Gras (Nièpce, 1826), inaugure une nouvelle ère dans le domaine de la représentation du réel. Réputée objective, la photographie se distingue de la peinture et devient rapidement l'art populaire par excellence. Son support de prédilection étant le papier, le format du livre lui convient parfaitement et contribue à sa large diffusion. Pour autant, son principe changera peu tant qu'elle restera un procédé chimique. Lors de sa mutation vers le numérique, le film argentique a cédé la place à un capteur de pixels et la photographie est passée de l'ère du réel objectif à celle du doute et du soupçon.
