Revised, corrected and enlarged by the original authors. With an advertisement to the fourth edition. In contemporary full calf, with spine label and marbled endpapers. Frontispiece depicting Rolle's family tree, the descent of which the authors claim to be the Norman Rollo of Normandy, and an engraved title page vignette. Collated, complete. Taking the form of a piece of literary criticsm, John Rolle is was picked out for ridicule by the authors after he shouted down Edmund Burke in the House of Commons. Here he is depicted as being guided around Parliament by Merlin, who introduces the leading personalities to him. TheRolliadwas a collaborative work and the authors remained anonymous. Joseph Richardson, a journalist, was the principal writer;George Ellis(an antiquary), Richard Tickell (a librettist) andFrench Laurence (Regius Professor of Civil Law at Oxford) also contributed. In contemporary full calf, with spine label.Externally, notably rubbed and marked to the extremities, with small chip to the spine label. Front board is held by cords only. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with occasional toning and the odd spot. Good. book.

A collaborative effort, this work takes the form of a piece of literary criticism of the epic poem 'The Rolliad'. With an engraved frontispiece and engraved title page. This work was originally published in a serial form for the early daily newspaper, the 'Morning Herald' from 1784-1785. This work is a very early, if not first edition in book form. The main victim of this satire is John Rolle, MP for Devon but further individuals mentioned include William Pitt, Henry Dundas and Charles Jenkinson. This poem was written by Joseph Richardson, George Ellis, Richard Tickell, French Laurence and Richard FitzPatrick. The second work to this volume is Sir John Hawkins' Probationary Odes. The seventh edition of this work. With publisher's adverts for Ridgway to the start of the work. Being an anthology of satires and parodies by Richard Tickell and others purporting to be the competitive essays of Thomas Warton's rivals for the laureatship.
