To overcome his drunken habits, [William] Clowes resolved to allow himself only half-a-pint of ale a day, which, as his biographer remarks, was for him just half-a-pint too much. The wildest dissipation alternated with desperate efforts at amendment.' (40) -- `Meanwhile, one of the rules Clowes had drawn up for himself,as already indicated,requiredthat he should take every opportunity to reprove sin. The sin of Sabbath desecration speci ally moved him. Some questioned his sanity, other concluded his religion to be a passing craze which the "wakes" would terminate.to the amazement of the people, who could not understand the marvellous change which had been wrought in this champion of wickedness and folly.' (47) -- `Some five feet nine inches in height, Hugh Bourne wa not at all prepossessing in appearance. The eyebrows were lowering, the face wrinkled; and although he was the first teetotaler in England, the most prominent feature of his face would not have given that impression. As all his family had "run to fat," he had a horror of becoming corpulent. A walk of thirty miles a day and a diet suitable to a jail or a workhouse was the remedy he adopted.'
