These beautiful, exquisite bindings executed by The Rose Bindery, Boston (stamped in gilt by them at bottom of each volume on the leath…er edging of the front pastedown endpapers). Interiors are very clean. Former owner's bookplate in each volume (Roderick Terry). Laid in is a sheet autographed: "Washington Irving / Sunnyside, March 24th, 1854". VOL II has the folding map as frontis - it is in fine condition. First edition, first state, with the copyright notice and "Henry W. Rees, Stereotyper" on the verso of the title-page of volume one, without signature "1*" on page 5, garbled footnote on page 239 in vol. II, without the footnote on page 259 of volume II. Graff 2158; Hill 872; Howes I-81; Wheat, Mapping the Transmississippi West 419 & II, p. 157-58: "An important milestone in western mapping." I bought these two beautiful books from an old friend. He himself was a retired antiquarian bookseller; these being treasures in his own extensive private collection. These are absolutely beautiful, rare in these outstanding bindings, plus the laid in autograph. A rare opportunity to by a cornerstone set for any discriminating collector. Signed by Author(s).

The story by Henry James (1842-1916) was first published in 1892 in the Graphic Magazine and was collected in English Hours of 1905 (along with Abbeys and Castles, which it was originally intended to to reprint here as well). This new edition includes a long introduction by Alan Tucker (1933-2017) and the 1989 drawings of Rigby Graham (1931-2015), landscape and topographical artist, for Winchelsea, Rye, with a few made for Abbeys and Castles on the cover and endpapers. Couverture rigide. Condition: Très bon. À Paris, chez la Veuve de Denis Chenault, marqué Nouvelle Édition mais sans date ni au début ni dans la page du privilège du roi, cependant on peux situer ce volume entre 1700 et 1730 puisque le mari de la dite veuve est mort en 1700 et elle-même avant 1730 (selon la BNF). Très belle reliu…re d'époque plein cuir au généreux décor dit « À la fanfare », toutes les tranches sont dorées, environ 19.5 X 13 cm, (12) 515 (5) incluant trois planches gravées sur bois (en plus de la page de titre gravée et de la petite gravure intégrée à la seconde page de titre). Plus précisément l'intérieur est constitué d'une première page de garde suivie de deux feuilles vierges, suivies d'une première page de titre ou l'éditeur mentionné est Charles Fosset, suivi d'une autre page de titre ou l'éditeur est la veuve Chenault et ou le mot Missel est écrit Messel, avec un « e », alors qu'à la première page de titre il est bien écrit avec un « i ». Ce Messel est écrit de même sur la page de Privilège du Roi qui d'ailleurs est signé DUPUY. Le reste est composé des 515 pages de texte en latin et à la fin on a deux feuilles vierges et la dernière garde. Toutes les pages sont ''réglées'' aux traits rouges. Notons une erreur de pagination à la page 143 qui est marquée plutôt 134 (on aura inversé le 3 et le 4). Notre exemplaire est logé dans un joli boitier plein cuir qui se ferme entièrement et dont le dos imite un dos à 5 nerfs (voir les images). Le boitier, plus récent, a été fait sur mesure et est signé « The Rose Bindery-Boston ». Toutefois à la base de son dos est imprimé en lettres dorées « Paris, bound by Legascon » référence probable à la reliure du livre lui-même. La reliure est en très bon état ne montrant que de l'usure légère aux coins droits des plats. La charnière avant a commencé à craquer, on peut voir une mince fente de 2.5 cm à la partie supérieure qui a peut-être déjà été réparée par le passé. Notons aussi un minuscule trou de ver à la base du dos (peut-être deux) et quelques rares pertes de dorures ici et là. Comme le livre semble avoir été recouvert d'une sorte de laque ces petits défauts semblent moins apparents. La dorure des plats a perdu de son éclat. L'intérieur est en excellent état sans rien à signaler sinon une toute petite déchirure à la première page vierge et la présence d'un ex-Libris ancien au nom de RODERICK TERRY au premier contre-plat. Il n'y a aucune marque ou inscription, ni même de roussure aux pages. Les trois planches gravées sont en excellent état. Enfin le BOITIER est en excellent état aussi ne montrant que de très rares traces d'usure très mineure ici et là aux arêtes. Comme Abebooks ne peut loger que 5 photos n'hésitez pas à me demander des images additionnelles.
