Post Card. First Impression. Colour Postcard. Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. The architectural design of the Santa Barbara Biltmore and outdoor garden rooms is a masterful synthesis of the Mediterranean Revival, Spanish Colonial Revival and Moorish Revival styles of architecture. It was designed by architect Reginald Johnson and landscape architect Ralph Stevens in 1926-1927 It was a $1,500,000 enterprise built by the Bowman-Biltmore Hotels Corporation of New York City, with a 5 March 1927 groundbreaking. The 'Coral Casino' and 'Butterfly Beach' are adjacent to the Biltmore. Fred William Stringer, produced ornamentation and murals for the Hotel. He was doing this in England, moved to Canada prior to 1920, then was brought to Southern California to do backdrops, sets and theater ornamentation for the fledgling movie industry. Stringer also did similar work for several hotels and theaters in the Los Angeles area. The Schwabacher name belongs to one of San Francisco's more prestigious families: Schwabacher-Frey was a major West Coast printer and stationer, and Schwabacher and Company was a successful investment banking firm.Apropos of the firm is an interesting story apropos of the firm: the artist [Miguel] Covarrubias painted eight "fantasy of the world" maps--for example, "Fauna and Flora of Pacific," "China Clipper"--maps which were shown in the San Francisco World's Fair in '39 and '40. Photographer Gabriel Molina was engaged to photograph them. Subsequently, they were lithographed jointly by the lithographers Schwabacher-Frey and H. S. Crocker and the maps were widely distributed. In exceptionally good condition.
