I…t was not the consciousness of lacking qualifications that worried me, for one need be neither doctor nor psychiatrist to illuminate this theme. Rather it seemed that to-day, when the demand for biography has called into being what amounts to a special industry, the motive of one who singles out for examination one of the most unpleasant individuals in history might well be suspect. Yet to-day it is generally acknowledged that everything that has lived on earth is worthy of our interest; even though the old idealistic precepts still operate. Obviously it is more elevating to occupy oneself with Calvin or Leibnitz than with Sade or Restif de la Bretonne, for these last are purely negative phenomena. Yet the negative complements the positive, and by throwing light on the darker problems of human nature we emphasise the true value of health and normality.
