'One of the constant factors in my process of working is the emotive dialogue I have with the scale materials in painting. Owing to the problems of age and fading eyesight i have had to create limitations in my working process so that the dialogue can continue. for about ten years now I have been building surfaces by spraying colour grounds of varying hue on the stretched white primed canvas. onc ehte syrface I want has been achieved I respond by sqeezing large tubes of acrlic colour directly on to the canvas and this results in an iconograpic element loosely relating to handwriting. This final application of marks is achieved with speed in a kind of dance by the painter reacting to the whole large surface. These paintings are not descriptive of any direct experience but are analogues for a varity of stimuli and actions which have been part of my life as a painter. the result is not only what you see, it is what you get as well.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Complete set of six lithographic views of colonial South Australia, by Edward Castle who came to South Australia in 1839 on board the Moffatt and took up land in the colony. These very rare suite of lithographs made only three years after settlement of Adelaide in 1836, are part of handful of early colonial South Australian images made for prospective emigrants and investors in Britain. Each lithograph is matted and presented in a Solander box with green morocco spine, gilt bands and red title label. 1. Bushmen at Camp Mouth of the Salt Creek SA 2. Hungry Bushmen after Beef, Scene near the Maria Creek SA 3. Kangaroo Hunting in SA 4. Mount Gambier, SA 5. Scene on the River Murray SA 6. The Rocky Creek SA Edward Castle was born in Bristol and arrived in South Australia on the Moffat in 1839 and took up land. The prints were lithographed by the well known lithographers Alfred and Rose Pocock of in Bristol. The family connection with Bristol would have been the reason why the prints were lithographed and published in Bristol. The Pococks at the time were actively promoting their lithographic printing business, by advertising their services in various newspapers and via their own printed flyers. They also supplied materials for lithographers and offered advice: 'directions given to assist Young Practitioners'. Hand colored albumen photograph 21 3/4 in. x 16 in., trimmed flush and affixed to old board. The surface shows some reticulation; the blank reverse of the mount board is acid stained. A very good example. Gioacchino Altobelli (1814 - 1878) studied painting in Rome during the 1830s, and is listed as a painter in the Roman Almanac of 1855. By 1858, Altobelli had joined in a photographic studio with his Spanish friend, Pompeo Molins. In 1865, Altobelli had formed a new company at Passeggiata di Ripetta 16, and was experimenting with the application of color to photographs and a new form of photographic chromolithography. "Altobelli decides to request a declaration of ownership; the latter, however, was not granted to him because of the opposition of the director of the Pontifical Chromolithography, Michele Stefano de Rossi, who claimed that the same invention had already been conceived by Mr. Gregorio Mariani, painter and draftsman of the plant. Despite the bitter disappointment, Altobelli perseveres in his research and comes to conceive a new method for "performing in a photograph the views of monuments with sky effect" for which he was awarded the patent in 1866. Many of the views he made with this invention were presented at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1867, enjoying great success." ( Wikipedia entry) also see Becchetti, Piero. FOTOGRAFI E FOTOGRAFIA IN ITALY 1839 - 1880. Generally, Altobelli's albumen prints are approximately 10 x 14 inches; this print is considerably larger.
