Zu Unrecht, wenn man bedenkt, dass er als Zeitgeist-Schriftsteller und Verfasser mehrerer fiktiver Erzählungen, Berichte, Theaterstücke und sozialanalytischer Schriften dem beginnenden 20. Jahrhundert einen prägnanten Spiegel vorhält. In dieser Arbeit soll auf intertextuelle Weise die Erzählung Herr von Pepinster und sein Popanz , entstanden 1915, einer näheren Betrachtung unterzogen werden. In dieser kurzen Geschichte über einen welterfahrenen Intellektuellen namens Herr von Pepinster, der von einem Gespenst in jeder Weise ersetzt wird, finden wir sowohl typisch moderne Anteile, als auch autobiographische Elemente eines Autors, der sich immer wieder zu neuen Erkenntniswelten hingezogen fühlte. Speziell soll hier aber nachvollzogen werden, wie in Herr von Pepinster und sein Popanz die literarischen Untergattungen der Gespenster-, Vampir- und Doppelgängergeschichte zu Tage treten. Es wird gezeigt, wie Schmitz in einem einzigen Werk wesentliche Kriterien aller drei Kategorien versammelte und zu einer wirksamen Symbiose vereinte. Diese Hausarbeit wurde in Zusammenarbeit zwischen Julia Kummer und Andreas Fingas erstellt. Der Zeitgeist-Literat, Kolumnist, Dichter, Essayist, und Lebemann Oscar Adolf Hermann Schmitz erblickte das Licht der Welt am 16. April 1873 in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe. Der Ort war Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts zu einem beliebten Urlaubsort avanciert, nicht zuletzt wegen der von den Gebrüder Blanc dort gegründeten Spielbank. In Bad Homburg traf sich die High Society und hier machte der junge Oscar Schmitz seine ersten prägenden Erfahrungen. Sein Vater war ein hoher Bahnbeamter, der für seinen Sohn eine ähnliche Laufbahn wie die seine vorgesehen hatte. Oscar sollte studieren, einen akademischen Abschluß machen, um einen höheren, bürgerlichen Beruf ergreifen zu können . Er wuchs in wohlhabenden Verhältnissen auf und bekam früh eine sehr fundierte Ausbildung in Kultur und Musik. Vor allem die Sprachenvielfalt seiner Familie kam Schmitz in seinem späteren Leben sehr zu Gute. Wenn sich Großeltern und Eltern trafen, sprachen sie englisch und französisch .

Aachen, Die Kuppel, 1923. 43 pp. Stapled. *cover a bit spotted damaged at the edges, top and bottom spine damaged, name on endpaper, otherwise in good condition* Uriel da Costa (c.1585 - april 1640) was a Portuguese philosopher who was born a New Christian but returned to Judaism and ended up questioning the Catholic and rabbinic institutions of his time. His earliest known written message is known as Propostas contra a Tradição (Propositions against the Tradition). In eleven short theses he called into question the disparity between certain Jewish customs and a literal reading of the Law of Moses, and more generally tried to prove from reason and scripture that this system of law is sufficient. In 1623 Da Costa published the Portuguese book Exame das tradições phariseas (Examination of Pharisaic Traditions). In this book he adds his newer views that the Hebrew Bible, especially the Torah, does not support the idea of immortality of the soul. The book became very controversial among the local Jewish community, whose leaders reported to the city authorities this was an attack on Christianity as well as on Judaism, and it was burned publicly. As a punishment for his heretical views, Da Costa was publicly given 39 lashes at the Portuguese synagogue in Amsterdam. He was then forced to lie on the floor while the congregation trampled over him. In Exemplar Humanae Vitae Da Costa tells the story of his life and intellectual development. It doubts whether biblical law was divinely sanctioned or whether it was simply written down by Moses. It suggests that all religion was a human invention, and specifically rejects formalized, ritualized religion. Da Costa committed suicide after the humiliation in the synagoge.
