Two volumes in one. 288pp; 240pp, portrait frontispiece dated 1823, and one engraved plate dated 1822 'and Joseph said unto his brethren.'. 8vo. Volume II without titlepage begins with drop-head title, 'The History of the Patriarch Jacob at Bethel.' Engraved plate foxed with small edge tear, frontispiece & titlepage a little dusted. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine, red morocco label; joints cracked, some wear to head & tail of spine & corners. Ownership name of J. Rogers, Haslemere, Surrey, on front e.p. & note on preliminary blank, 'John Rogers, his book, presented to him by Mr J. Goldsmith, March 1848'. J. Goldsmith's name at head of titlepage. First published in 1822 (Moore Theological College, Australia, only), and there was a third edition in 1826. WorldCat records Brown University only of both volumes of this second edition, and Bodleian only for Volume I. Volume II of this second edition was published in 1824, and the work was originally intended to have been complete in a single volume, as noted in the preface to vol II. In this copy vol. II is bound without the titlepage, preface, and frontispiece, and the volume has been bound with just the main text of that volume, thus continuing the 'striking historical parts' without any interruption. Hawker, 1753-1827, grandfather of Robert Stephen Hawker, the poet. He was known as 'The Star of the West' for his popular preaching, In 1803 Hawker had commenced publication of his Poor Man's Commentary on the Bible. It first came out in 'Penny Numbers' to make it accessible to the poor for whom it was intended. His Scripture Extracts appear to be another attempt at widespread popularisation of the scriptures, as in his Preface he writes that: 'it is hoped. that this little volume, may be permitted to lay on the table, or in the window of various places, where larger publications may be inadmissible. The friend while waiting for his friend in the parlour; the man of business, or the traveller stopping at an inn; the youth from school, or the servants in the kitchen.'.
