Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First UK edition. 12mo. Original pictorial paper wrappers. Rubbing to covers. Otherwise about fine. A beautiful copy of this infamous feminist manifesto. Originally self-published in New York, the manifesto got sudden prominence in 1968 when the author turned her words into action and shot the artist Andy Warhol, almost killing him; she was sentenced to three years in prison. This UK edition has an introduction by Vivian Gornick and a preface by publisher Maurice Girodias. Preceded by the American edition (same publisher) and equally scarce.

Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. A lightning bolt of feminist rage and a sophisticated riposte to the intellectual and social misogyny of the 1960s, here in its first UK edition. Somewhat more uncommon than the 1968 American first, whose Paul Krassner commentary is here replaced with a lengthy introduction by Vivian Gornick (a change that first appeared in the American second edition of 1970, also by Olympia). London: The Olympia Press, 1971. Preface by publisher Maurice Girodias. Introduction by Vivian Gornick. Perfect-bound in printed wraps, 7-1/8 x 4-3/4 in. xxxvi, 52pp. Hinges and corners moderately worn, with some loss of color/surface material. Spot of rubbing to rear panel. Minor twist to base of spine. Binding remains secure. No fading to red portions of wraps. Good to very good.

Early excerpted appearance of Valerie Solanas' S.C.U.M. Manifesto, her famous tract for the Society of Cutting Up Men. According to the accompanying editorial introduction: "Valerie Solanis [sic] shot Andy Warhol, and appeared in print for the second time - this time the subject of countless news stories. Her first appearance was in a surprisingly well-written article on panhandling plus published in Cavalier. But her main act was public, in-the-park recitation of her life's obsession: SCUM Manifesto. Valerie wanted us to publish the manifesto over a year ago. It's worth exposure, but we're sorry these excerpts finally appear under the present circumstances." Not noted in that introduction is that alongside its recitation, Solanas also self-published and distributed the Manifesto around New York. Their bibliographical note on her print appearances is missing at least one earlier excerpt of SCUM Manifesto (in the Berkeley Barb in its June 7-13 issue that same year). The PR circus surrounding Solanas' shooting of Warhol resulted in not only her name in the news, but a clamor to publish her incendiary work: this and the Berkeley Barb were able to rush out in advance of the immediate publication of its trade edition on Maurice Girodias' Olympia Press, probably only by virtue of the nimbler turnaround inherent to newsprint periodicals. Beyond the Solanas excerpt, this issue also features fascinating counterculture features such as Paul Davidson's "Deal Acid and Avoid Getting Busted" and an installment of Charles Bukowski's "Dirty Old Man," the second published by the paper. Some soiling and handling wear; minor creasing and tears around edges; inked date (7-16-1968) to front cover; horizontal fold throughout; Very Good. Folded newsprint tabloid (11-1/4 x 15 inches) in full color photo-illustrated wraps. 24pp.

Condition: Very Good Plus. Olympia Press, 1968, 1970. Very Good Plus. [First Edition after a self-published edition] Olympia Press Special, 1968, perfect-bound softcover 12mo, 105pp + 6pp ads, color wraps; [Second Printing] Olympia Press OPS-12, 1970, perfect-bound softcover 12mo, 52pp + 8pp ads, color wraps. Vintage paperbacks, explicit manifestos for the "Society for Cutting Up Men," arguing that the world has been ruined by men and women the saviors. The author charged men $1 more than women upon the release of her self-published edition, a mimeographed book distributed mostly to Greenwich Village beatniks, hippies, and punks, and the treatise advocated for something close to anarchy and the elimination of males in general (but also "non-liberated women"). Widely regarded as the culmination of both anarchy and feminism, the title has seen several reprints, printings in different languages, and updated versions, yet these two first printings are in our estimate the real gems in any SCUM's collection, with the 2nd printing being somewhat scarcer. Both Very Good Plus overall, light rubbing and toning, light cover creases and faint corner wear to 2 corners (1st), and small scuff to rc (2nd). For mature audiences.

Near Fine with light foxing and light wear to wraps, light sunning to spine and pages toned. couverture souple. «Life in this society being, at best, an utter bore and no aspect of society being at all relevant to women, there remains to civic-minded, responsible, thrill-seeking females only to overthrow the government, eliminate the money system, institute complete automation and destroy the male sex.»

couverture souple. The Olympia Press | New York 1968 | 10.50 x 18 cm | broché | Édition originale après l'introuvable première version ronéotypée réalisée par l'autrice. «Life in this society being, at best, an utter bore and no aspect of society being at all relevant to women, there remains to civic-minded, responsible, thrill-seeking females only to overthrow the government, eliminate the money system, institute complete automation and destroy the male sex.»

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. New York: Olympia Press, 1968. 8vo, 105 p., original red wraps. First edition of this manifesto by the would be Andy Warhol assassin, with commentary 'Wonder Waif Meets Super Neuter' by Paul Crasser. Solanas advocated the creation of a world without men, and though the work comes off as a parody, Solanas defended her ideas as serious. Her work in recent years has been revisited and she is now seen as an early feminist and gay rights activist. This is a VG copy, with small chip to front wrap adjacent front spine joint, chafing to wrap edges and front spine joint, minor creasing to wraps, with short crease to lower rear wrap; light discoloration to endpapers, lower outermost corner of several pages crimped; small stain to lower front page ends, previous owners signature to top of half title; text block toned, but a solid copy overall of a scarce title. This copy lacks a fep, though it may not have been bound with one (the final leaf is an Olympia Love Letters / Hate Letters advertisement.

First UK edition, first impression. Solanas wrote this radical feminist text between 1965 and 1967, self-publishing mimeographed copies to distribute in New York (selling them for one dollar to women, two dollars to men), the text of which differs slightly to this edition and lacks the introductions by Maurice Girodias and Vivian Gornick added here. The manifesto opens: "Life in this society being, at best, an utter bore and no aspect of society being at all relevant to women, there remains to civic-minded, responsible, thrill-seeking females only to overthrow the government, eliminate the money system, institute complete automation and destroy the male sex". The controversial text, which has been interpreted both straightforwardly and as a parody of patriarchal philosophical tracts, has become notorious. It is nevertheless now seen as a key piece of the 1960s feminist canon, with radical feminist activists of the time finding within it "something no one else was articulating: a wild and uncompromising insistence that female subordination was utterly primal. What it voiced was new and profoundly compelling: incandescent, unladylike rage, which, once unleashed, fundamentally reshaped the women's movement" (Hamilton). In 1968 Solanas was sentenced to a three-year prison term for shooting Andy Warhol, an event referenced on the rear cover of this work. Solanas's life was the basis for the 1996 film I Shot Andy Warhol. Breanne Fahs, Valerie Solanas: The Defiant Life of the Woman Who Wrote Scum (and Shot Andy Warhol), Feminist Press at CUNY, 2014; Marybeth Hamilton, "Remembering 1968: The S.C.U.M. Manifesto for the Society for Cutting up Men" in History Workshop Journal, July 2018. Octavo. Front cover image of Solanas by Fred W. McDarrah. Original pictorial paper wrappers, lettering to front cover in black and white, and to spine in white. Ownership inscription of one Dan Wood on front free endpaper. Edges rubbed and lightly creased, gently foxed; a very good copy.

First edition in book form, first printing, a bright copy. Solanas wrote this radical feminist text between 1965 and 1967, self-publishing mimeographed copies to distribute in New York. The text of her mimeographed edition differs slightly but significantly to this and lacks the commentaries by Maurice Girodias and Paul Krassner added here. Interpreted both straightforwardly and as a parody of patriarchal philosophical tracts, the controversial text quickly became notorious. The manifesto's memorable opening line issues a call to arms: "Life in this society being, at best, an utter bore and no aspect of society being at all relevant to women, there remains to civic-minded, responsible, thrill-seeking females only to overthrow the government, eliminate the money system, institute complete automation and destroy the male sex". Radical feminist activists of the time found within it "something no one else was articulating: a wild and uncompromising insistence that female subordination was utterly primal. Original pictorial wrappers lettered in black, white, and red, edges green. Minor rubbing to extremities: a near-fine copy.
