Add to basketin slightly later eighteenth century tree calf, extremities worn, small worm hole on the lower board and some rubbing, flat spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label lettered in gilt. Small 12mo (138 x 80 mm), ff. [36]; pp. 36, comprising elaborately engraved title-page and 35 engraved plates (plate mark 58 x 90 mm), each plate depicting a scene from the Passion, the plates within a single ruled border, numbered centrally at the top in a break in the border, good strong impressions, the first plate (plate ?2?) signed ?S. le Clerc f.?, Plate 23 bound before Plate 22, a small tear to the corner of the final plate, with minimal loss but nowhere near the plate impression; the text after the plates being part of an additional devotional text, bound without the title page, A scarce pocket sized reissue of Le Clerc?s striking suite of engravings depicting the Passion of Christ, bound here with a section from the Ordinary of the Mass: a nice example showing the use of the engravings for personal devotion. The text following the plates does not have a title-page but begins on A1 with the blessing of the water and rite for exorcism (pp. 1-4) which is followed by the liturgy for the Ordinary of the Mass (pp. 5-23) and a final section giving the Prefaces, Prayers for the Faithful and a selection of Hymns. Given the subject matter of the plates, this little volume would have been a useful aid to devotions during the season of Lent. First published by Audran in 1692, this is one of a number of reissues of the plates in different formats and with differing borders to the plates: here the plates are within a simple rule and are numbered in a break of the upper rule. Dedicated to Madame de Maintenon, the wife of Louis XIV, the very attractive ornamental title-page bears her arms flanked by the figures of Religion and Charity, above the dedicatory inscription. The first plate begins the story of the Passion with Christ and his Apostles arriving in the Garden of Gethsemane and so forth to the Crucifixion, with particularly striking plates showing the Agony in the Garden juxtaposed with the sleeping Apostles, the proceedings before Pilate including the Flagellation, the fixing of the Cross in the ground with Christ on it and the Resurrection. Among Le Clerc?s many works - he was a prolific artist and engraver as well as a teacher of perspective at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, this achieved a wide public, perhaps because of its devotional usage, and saw a number of editions. ?Few artists have produced as much work as Le Clerc. he treated every genre with indisputable mastery (Benezit). See Brunet III, 915 for the 1692 edition; Jombert, Catalogue raisonné de l?oeuvre de Sebastien le Clerc, 232.

Add to basketin contemporary or slightly later (early eighteenth century) red panelled morocco gilt, spine gilt in compartments, head- and tail-cap chipped, the joints worn and the front joint very slightly weak, corners and edges a little bumped, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, with the contemporary heraldic bookplate of John Somers, Lord Somers to the front pastedown, gilt edges. Oblong 8vo (143 x 212 mm), ff. [36], comprising elaborately engraved title-page and 35 engraved plates (plate mark 76 x 108 mm), each plate depicting a scene from the Passion, within elaborate border, the plates numbered 2-36, in the centre of the inner blank frame, the first plate (plate ?2?) signed ?S. le Clerc f.?, Plate 16 misbound before Plate 12, Plates 28 and 29 misnumbered, a couple of small marginal tears to the title, and to the last few leaves, some browning throughout (particularly to the title-page) and the occasional stain, but generally clean, A scarce reissue of Le Clerc?s striking suite of engravings depicting the Passion of Christ, first published by Audran in 1692. The engravings originally appeared as simple scenes, but are here presented within elaborate borders, made to look like picture frames. Dedicated to Madame de Maintenon, the wife of Louis XIV, the very attractive ornamental title-page bears her arms flanked by the figures of Religion and Charity, above the dedicatory inscription. The first plate begins the story of the Passion with Christ and his Apostles arriving in the Garden of Gethsemane and so forth to the Crucifixion, with particularly striking plates showing the Agony in the Garden juxtaposed with the sleeping Apostles, the proceedings before Pilate including the Flagellation, the physical details of the erection of the Cross with Christ on it and the Resurrection. Designed to be used as devotional material, particularly during the Lenten season, this is a lovely copy, with wide margins, bound in contemporary red panelled morocco and with strong, crisp impressions of the plates. Provenance: John Somers-Cocks, Viscount Eastnor and second Earl Somers (1788-1852), politician and soldier. See Brunet III, 915 for the 1692 edition; Jombert, Catalogue raisonné de l?oeuvre de Sebastien le Clerc, 232.
