A narrative of Waugh's four years in the Second World War, having been recalled to regimental duties at its outbreak. Action in Britain, France, Syria and Egypt, Persia and Iraq. Fact-based but written in the third person to give some fictional elements in true AW style. A gentle historical read. Ex library copy with all the usual trimmings, eg spine references, rubber stamps, library card holder pocket on inside rear cover on which is printed "N Z Government Country Library Service", other marks and entries. A big chunk of the book has experienced some water damage which has left many pages wrinkled and about 25 stained. Several other marks. Title, author and publisher printed in black on spine, remains bold. Jacket very poor (but at least there is one!): again water damage and consequent wrinkling and staining, some tears and nicks esp around spine with some losses, wear at corners and edges, marks on rear, though all text is clearly readable.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Einar Nerman (illustrator). First Edition. vi, 37 pages. First half of the book includes lyrics to popular ballads by the English composer Maurice Besly. The remainder of the book includes humorous epigrams about famous musicians and writers. Some of the epigrams are accompanied by the superb caricatures of the Swedish artist Einar Nerman. Very SCARCE: OCLC locates only 7 copies in libraries worldwide. SIGNED by Besly on the title page, with an inscription on the front endpaper from the author to "Baroness de Bush" (Pauline Joran, the noted opera singer who married William Ernest Bush, the first and last Baron de Bush). The book is in very good condition: tight, with some soiling to cover, moderate wear to corners, and minor foxing in margins of title page and a few other pages. Much nicer than it sounds--certainly a more than acceptable copy for the serious collector. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. SIGNED. Book.
