Presentation copy: 'Julia Braddock with love from Ann & Judith & their daddy, H. E. Bates 1936.' Joseph Edward Braddock (1902 Ð ?) was a poet and writer who wrote articles about Bates' work. He and H. E. Bates were friends and wrote to one another. Julia Braddock was possibly his daughter? Bates had four children, two sons, and two daughters called Ann & Judith. H. E. Bates (1905 Ð 1974) was an author best known for 'The Darling Buds of May' and 'Love for Lydia'. browned. Head and tail of spine very slightly split at hinge else sound, edges of covers and spine a little - near very good. Signedes.

Slim volume in original grey-blue boards, with decoratively bordered gilt titling on front; a hint of age-toning to top of boards and faded along spine; covers a bit splayed; edges lightly foxed; pages clean and tight. A near fine copy. [N.B. - Privately printed for Christmas, 1926, when Bates was working in the Bumpus bookshop. Inscription reads: "Mary B. Haywood, / chiefly to remind her of / those long, [word scribbled out] short, and / always charming conversations / she sometimes held in the / autumn mornings of this year / with / H.E. Bates / Christmas / 1926"].
