Find discussion from an Englishman's point of view, of the problem of The Scottish Accent. The author allows that it will be easier to rid oneself of the (unfortunate) accent than to change customary phrasings.

Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Wislawa Szymborska's "Miracle Fair" in a felicitous English translation. A new selection of Szymborska's poems in English: Fresh and vital translations by Joanna Trzeciak that amount to a different approach, meticulously culled from her body of work in the Polish original. Part of the reason Szymborska's work resonates with readers is that it demands to be read ALOUD: Its "metaphorical intonation" is a "vocalise" (to paraphrase the great American poet Richard Howard), and these new translations are a "counter-voice" to the elegant translations of Stanislaw Baranczak and Clare Canavagh. A fine original colour lithograph from Vanity Fair, a magazine which was published from 1869-1914, featuring a large caricature portrait each week. These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". This portrait will come mounted/matted and ready to frame using archivist quality materials, mount size 18 x 12 inches, 47 x 31 cms. It will be presented in a cellophane wrapper with our label guaranteeing authenticity. We pack very well, between sheets of hardboard. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a portrait of Clement Nugent Jackson, with the caption "Jacky". Clement Nugent Jackson (2 April 1846-1924) was a British athlete, academic and athletics administrator. Jackson was a gifted hurdler, winning the high hurdles at the fourth Varsity Sports of 1867, with a time of 17.8s. He later improved this to 16.0s, a British record (that stood for many years) and probably a World record, although at that time there was no international body to such records. He had to retire from competition after badly cutting his foot on an oyster shell while running against W G Grace.

The borders (15a and 15) designed by Morris for this book were only used once again, in HAND AND SOUL.  The plot of the story was suggested by that of HAVELOK THE DANE, printed by the Early English Text Society. Morris's proto-fantasy novels profoundly influenced later, fellow Oxford writers, C.S. Lewis (THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA) and J.R.R. Tolkien (THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS), helping to pave the way for all modern epic/high fantasy authors. Morris said of this edition, "When you come to look at it, and see that you get a book like this for seven and sixpence a volume[!], it would be impossible to refuse buying them. I love my books, and I love making them, and I think of these, quite the most charming things issued from my press" (Ideal Book).  Dated July 25, issued Sept. 25,1895. [Sparling No. 35, p. 161.
