Add to basketIn very good condition. A scarce first edition 1847 printed work of sensational popular fiction. Translated by Thomas De Quincey from Der Freischutz by Johann August Apel. PHYSICAL CONDITION: In original brown cloth binding, blind stamped with decorative detail to boards and titled encompassing additional design to spine. Slightly bumped to corners and a little bumped to spine top and tail as expected. Cracked over front gutters. Endpapers and leaves throughout age toned and a little finger marked as expected. Front pastedown reveals a pasted in contemporary ownership signature reading 'Arthur Baxter, Runcorn, 1861'. Frontispiece engraving titled 'The Porter discovered a man weltering in his blood, Page 37' and small vignette to title page, both in very good condition. Text block remains sound other than cracking along gutter between pp. 224 and 225. Rear leaves numbered to 249, stained but text still legible. Very minimal loss to occasional fore edge, again not compromising the text. Owned by only 2 universities worldwide: Uni of Virginia and Brigham Young. 256 pp. collated and complete.
