Es fehlte an breiter Unterstützung seitens der Bürger und auch eine natürliche Machtbasis, so bekam die Armee eine bedeutende Rolle zugespielt. Der König bestand an Einführung des Wehrdienstes auch gegen den Willen von Großbritannien und der Stämme. Der Einsatz der Armee für politische Zwecke war in der Vergangenheit üblich, so hat sich das Militär mehr in den politischen Duellen gezeigt als an dem Schlachtfeld. Offiziere mit politischen Ambitionen, einige davon national orientiert, waren eine effektive verlängerte Hand der Regierungspartei. Jedoch so wie ihre zivilen Partner waren auch die Offiziere von unterschiedlichen Loyalitäten und so haben sie auch zu der Uneinigkeit im Staat beigetragen.Als völlig erschöpft und zermörbt König Fay al im September 1933 starb, übernam sein junger und allgemein beliebter Sohn Ghazi sein Amt. Ihn hat man später als starken Patrioten, dass hieß antibritisch orientierten Herrscher, wahrgenommen. Was ihm aber fehlte waren Autorität und das Prestige seines Vaters. Rivalisierende politische Fraktionen haben die Stammesstruktur unterwandert und mehr diktatorische Tendenzen gezeigt. So waren ihre Regierungen nur von kurzer Lebensdauer. Die Opposition war eine Allianz von Mittelschicht, Intelektuellen und patriotisch geprägten Offizieren die von Kemal Atatürk inspiriert waren.Der plötzliche Tod von König Ghazi im April 1939 war mit Gerüchten von Ermordung begleitet. Nuri as Said und einflussreiche Offiziere haben den Neffen von König Fay al: Abdalilah zum neuen Regenten ernannt. Die neue politische Konstellation war mit dem Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkrieges völlig zerrissen. Frankreichs Niederlage war eine große Motivation für die Regierung von Rashid Ali al Kaylani den britischen Einfluss in seinem Land für immer loszuwerden. Aber die britische Militärintervention im Mai 1941 vernichtete die irakische Armee fast vollständig und führte wieder zu Besetzung des Irak.
