Good condition, with heavy wear to the vellum boards and damage to the upper right corner of the front board and upper left corner of the rear board. The pages are rather grubby, with scattered foxing. Frontispiece and an additional 39 tipped in color plates, all present and in excellent condition. Lacking the ribbon ties. Book.

Limited edition, number 126 of 500 copies, signed by Dulac: 4to (290 x 240 mm); 40 colour plates, including frontispiece, titled tissue guards, all by Dulac, title-page in red and black, spotting to prelims, some more noticeable foxing to tissue-guards and pages with blocks of text, however all plates are bright and clean; publisher's full ivory vellum, lettering in gilt with embossed decoration to spine and to front board, top edge gilt, others uncut, lacks ties, rear board exposed to shelf wear and rubbing, minor blemishes to front board (slightly splayed) and to spine, otherwise very good; [xxiv] + 134pp. A sumptuous, limited edition, exquisitely illustrated.

Book plate of Benjamin C, Toledano. The latter, born to one of the city's old families was an early Republican at a time when the Democratic Party dominated Louisiana politics. Front cover and spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Publisher's full vellum. with cloth ties intact. Near fine.

The work shows an evolution in Dulac's work in comparison to Arabian Nights, ".more convincing and showed greater human understanding as the illustrations moved beyond stage scenes and became mood pictures or tone poems. From a limited edition of five hundred copies, numbered and signed by the artist Edmund Dulac, of which this is No. 231. Very large folio 11.5" x 8.5" x 2"; 144pp. Both rare and scarce. Ivory full-vellum-covered hardboards; vellum being specially processed from calfskin and proven to be able to last for 1,000 years. Ornate gilt lettering and artistic design on front and spine. Beautiful and ornate previous owner bookplate inside front board. Boards are lightly warped, slightly spotted and darkened in some areas. (see photos) Text block clean, tight, square, unmarked, with heavy-weight paper stock, very heavily deckled edges. Lightly tanning throughout but no age speckling. Features 40 tipped-in color plates by Edmund Dulac, mounted on dark green art paper and covered with letter press captioned paper guards.
