THE SILENT PAST tells of the amazing Bronze Age culture that flourished on Sardinia 3,000 years ago; of the civilization that created a city on the site of Jericho, known to us from the Bible, 6,000 years before the birth of Christ; of the fabled Scythians of Roman history, who alone among ancient peoples resisted conquest by the dreaded Roman legions; of the men who built Avebury, Stonehenge and the other impressive monuments of the megalithic period. He has also investigated many of the legends of antiquity and by summing up the evidence of scores of sources, marshaled impressive answers to some of the ancient world's most famous riddles. Here is all that is known of the secrets of the oracles of Delphi and Dodona, of the location of the fabled King Solomon's mines, of the legendary city of Tartessus, of the story of Atlantis. Ivar Lissner ranges around the world, pausing on every continent to explore the lost and mysterious cultures of man. And from the pages of THE SILENT PAST springs impressive evidence of the basic unity of man, and of his quest for spiritual values and the eternal life. THE SILENT PAST is exciting reading as a work of archaeology. It is also a profoundly moving spiritual document. Jericho. Ugarit. Canaan. Tyre. Sidon. Malta. Stonehenge. Mari. Avebury. Morbihan. Sardinia. Carthage. Crete. Delphi. Dodona. Tartessu.s Scythia. Canary Islands. China. Gandhara. Tun~huang. Silk Route. Bactria. Atlantis. Ophir. Benin. Sepik. Tikal.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Latro forgets everything when he sleeps. Writing down his experiences every day and reading his journal anew each morning gives him a poignantly tenuous hold on himself, but his story's hold on readers is powerful indeed. The two previous novels, combined in "Latro In The Mist" ("Soldier of the Mist" and "Soldier of Arete") are generally considered classics of contemporary fantasy. Latro now finds himself in Egypt, a land of singing girls, of spiteful and conniving deities. Without his memory, he is unsure of everything, except for his desire to be free of the curse that causes him to forget. The author's only work. Hunter was present on board H. M. S. Dido during various episodes in the Anglo-Egyptian war in Syria in 1850. A British-Turkish military force invaded Lebanon in September 1840 in order to coerce the Egyptian forces led by Ibrahim Pasha to leave Syria, and the return of the Ottoman rule. The work is dedicated to Admiral Stopford under whose command Hunter served during that war. It includes detailed accounts of the occupation of several Lebanese coastal cities, and excursions into the Lebanon as well as correspondence, official documents and appendix listing the honours conferred upon Stopford. It is a beautifully colour plate featuring people, fish, dogs, boats, buildings, the Sidon sea-castle and bridge and the Mediterranean. We have a good number of impressive images from the Standard Folio Edition of this classic work available for purchase. As well as Sidon there are many views available of Egypt, Nubia, Petra, Sinai, the Jordan, Tyre and Baalbec. Please inquire for further details. In the course of two and a half months in 1838, traveling some 800 miles south from Cairo, Roberts recorded the monumental temple sites along the Nile in more than a hundred sketches. As the first British artist to sketch the monuments of Ancient Egypt, set on "Plains so vast.that, until you come near them, you have no idea of their magnificence," Roberts was well aware of the stir his drawings would create in London. According to John Ruskin, writing in PRAETERITA, Roberts's drawings "were the first studies ever made conscientiously by an English painter, not to exhibit his own skill, but to give true portraiture of scenes of historical and religious interest.".
