Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good-. First. Walter John de la Mare OM CH (1873 - 1956) was an English poet, short story writer and novelist. He is probably best remembered for his works for children, for his poem "The Listeners", and for his psychological horror short fiction, including "Seaton's Aunt", "The Green Room" and "All Hallows". In 1921, his novel Memoirs of a Midget won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction, and his post-war Collected Stories for Children won the 1947 Carnegie Medal for British children's books. This book collects three of his short stories, Lichen, Benighted and Winter. This copy is near fine in brown cloth with titles on a paper label on the spine. The spine ends are slightly bumped, and there is a small spot on the front cover. The endpapers are somewhat age darkened, but the contents are otherwise clean and unmarked. The unclipped dust jacket, now in a protective mylar sleeve, has sun darkening on the jacket spine and very slight edge wear at the corners. The author has inscribed the book to Herbert M. Meyer, a well-known American collector. A nice copy in a very nice jacket. Herbert Marx Meyer (1903-1988) was a noted Detroit book collector who assembled a large collection of early 20th century literature. He corresponded with many of the authors of the time, and thus many of his books bear friendly and warm authorial inscriptions. . PO25. Signed.

[196]; The BOOK near Fine, being clean and bright internally with some very faint mottling to the end-papers ; the original publisher's plain cardslipcase has done a wonderful job of protecting the book, and is a little scuffed, split and discoloured, but holding firm. A collection of tales from 'The Connoisseur', 'Broomsticks' and 'The Riddle' which include 'Miss Duveen' (about a child who befriends a troubled soul), 'The Bird of Travel' (concerning a large house in the woods), 'The Tree' (about a rich fruit merchant), 'The Nap' (a comic tale about a father desperate for peace and quiet), 'Missing' (about secrets and a meeting with a stranger in a tea shop), 'The Wharf' (a young woman's dream of death) and 'Maria-Fly' (about a little girl's fascination by the little insect). The diverse stories are all wonderfully illuminated by the colourful illustrations by John Nash, founding member of the Society of Wood Engravers. A handsome production. Scarce, especially so in the slipcase. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. Signed by Illustrator(s).
