Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First edition. First printing. With the ownership signature of Harrison B. Tordoff at the top of the half-title page. A nice association copy, as Tordoff was a prominent ornithologist and conservationist. He was the head of the Bell Museum of Natural History at the University of Minnesota. A finch expert, he was also dedicated to the conservation of the endangered Kirtland's warbler and, especially, peregrine falcons. He was responsible for the reintroduction of peregrines to the upper Mississippi River region via the Midwest Peregrine Restoration Project which he founded. He helped hatch more than 1,200 peregrine chicks. Peregrines were of course the unfortunate poster bird for species that declined due to eggshell thinning from DDT, the pernicious chemical that is the subject ofSilent Spring. For a full biography of Tordoff, see the tribute from Tordoff's former student, the famous ornithologist Frank Gill. Green cloth boards, gold lettering, yellow top stain, patterned endpapers. First printing stated. With drawings by Louis and Lois Darling. Near fine with just a little rubbing to board edges and spine ends. In a very good jacket with some edge wear and shallow chipping, especially to top of spine and either side of spine. Some faint red discoloration on rear panel from rubbing. But a working copy of someone important in the field.

Early printing of the 40th anniversary edition author's classic work. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers. Signed by Edward O. Wilson on the title page. Drawings by Lois and Louis Darling. Afterword by Edward O. Wilson. Introduction by Linda Lear. In fine condition. In the late 1950s, Carson turned her attention to conservation, especially environmental problems that she believed were caused by synthetic pesticides. The result was Silent Spring, which brought environmental concerns to the American public. "Her book is a cry to the reading public to help curb private and public programs which by use of poisons will end by destroying life on earth. . Miss Carson, with the fervor of an Ezekiel, is trying to save nature and mankind" (The New York Times). Silent Spring "became a runaway bestseller, with international reverberations It is well crafted, fearless and succinct Even if she had not inspired a generation of activists, Carson would prevail as one of the greatest nature writers in American letters" (Mattheissen, Time). Named by TIME Magazine as one of the 100 best and most influential non-fiction books since 1923 and by Modern Library as one of the 100 greatest non-fiction books of the twentieth century. In 2006, it was named one of the 25 greatest science books of all time by the editors of Discover Magazine.

Eike (1911-1983), the recipient of this copy, began working for the U.S. Public Health Service in 1934. He went on to work for the Civil Service Commission, the U.S. State Department, and retired from the U.S. Information Agency in 1970. Eike joined the Virginia Society of Ornithology (VSO) in 1933, serving as president from 1950-1952 and again from 1969-1971. His fifty years of membership is commemorated with the James W. Eike Service Award, recognizing VSO members for their outstanding conservation efforts and service to the organization. Rachel Carson (1907-1964) was a pioneering environmentalist who raised global awareness about the dangers of synthetic pesticides like DDT, both for humans and the biosphere. Her writing and activism is credited with inspiring numerous legislative movements and the eventual creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First edition. A first printing, inscribed in a blue pen to no recipient (as usual) by Carson on the title page: "with best wishes, Rachel Carson." Uncommon signed, especially as Carson passed away of cancer less than two years after the book's publication. A looser signature than typical, perhaps signed shortly before her death. Originally serialized in the New Yorker,Silent Springis often credited with starting the environmental moment, as the book brought vividly to the public consciousness the pernicious effects of pesticides and other chemicals on wildlife and human society. Carson's opening chapter in the book, "A Fable for Tomorrow" imagines a spring where finally no birds sing, and later chapters expertly break down the science of pesticides for the lay reader. Illustrations by Lois and Louis Darling. Green cloth, gilt lettering, patterned endpapers. Near fine with just a little rubbing to the spine's corners, otherwise a crisp, clean copy, seemingly unread. In a very good plus jacket with slight edge wear, light creasing to spine ends, and two discrete, taped-mended one-eighth-inch tears on the upper rear edge of the spine, only noticeable with scrutiny. A very nice signed copy of one of the key books of the twentieth century.

Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. First edition, first printing of Rachel Carson's extremely influential work, which is credited with creating a worldwide awareness of the dangers of man-made environmental pollution. An important and fantastic association copy, signed and inscribed by Carson on the half title page dated one week before publication, "For Alfred Eisenstaedt, a fellow naturalist, with the wish that your assignments may take you always to the earth's most beautiful spots. [signed] Rachel Carson September 20, 1962." Eisenstaedt was an extremely influential photographer who often has been called the "Father of Photojournalism." He photographed Carson at least twice, taking one of what has now become the most iconic and famous images of her. He was so invested in her work as a naturalist that even some 16 years after her death he helped produce a limited edition of The Sea Around Us which was illustrated with his photographs and published by The Limited Editions Club in 1980. Eisenstaedt was a German-born American photographer who achieved prominence working as a staff photographer for Life magazine, which featured more than 90 of his pictures on its covers, and published more than 2,500 of his photo stories. Among his most famous cover photographs was "V-J Day in Times Square," taken during the V-J Day celebration in New York City, showing an American sailor kissing a nurse in a "dancelike dip" which "summed up the euphoria many Americans felt as the war came to a close." Bound in publisher's original dark green cloth with gilt stamping to spine and front cover. Near Fine with slight wear to cloth at extremities, pages tanned and several with browning from formerly laid in clippings, and two tiny holes to the front free endpaper. In a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket with light rubbing and light edge wear, with a small chip along the bottom edge of the front panel near the flap fold. A beautiful copy. Silent Spring is Carson's best-known work in which she describes the harmful effects of pesticides on the environment. It is widely credited with helping launch the environmental movement. Signed copies are scarce as the author died of cancer within two years of its publication, but even more scarce is a copy with such a stellar association.
