Burgundy quarter morocco and burgundy cloth, folio, black skiver spine-label between bands, top edge gilt, 34 cm, [12], 69 pp, [52] leaves of plates, 88 monochrome and 9 colour plates. Includes reproductions of all miniatures of the ms., by 3 illuminators identified as the Bedford Master, the Fastolf Master, and the Master of the Munich Golden legend. "The Polish title of a manuscript whose style is French and which now forms part of the inheritance of the British Crown invites attention to its history. The script, the painted capitals, borders and miniatures all indicate that the text was copied in Paris about 1420-1425 and that the miniatures were begun in the workshop of the illuminator whom we now call the Master of the Duke of Bedford, briefly, the Bedford Master. But for whom was it executed? The fact that the text is for the use of Paris tells us little; it may simply mean that the first owner preferred this form for her personal prayerbook. Condition: Near Fine. 69 pp. + 9 tipped-in color plates + 88 monochrome plates; small folio, quarter crimson morocco, black leather title label on spine with gilt title, crimson cloth sides; t.e.g. The Sobieski Hours was "written and illuminated c. 1430, initially in the workshop of the Master of the Bedford Hours [along with two other major illuminators: the Fastolf Master and the Master of the Munich Golden Legend]. The Bedford Master was responsible particularly for the miniatures introducing the life of the Virgin Mary in the Hours proper. One of his minatures give an indication of who the book of hours was created for. It depicts a lady who is probably Isabelle of Brittany, praying to St Margaret. At the end of the seventeenth century, the manuscript belonged to Jan Sobieski, King of Poland, and by the marriage of his granddaughter Clementina to James Stuart, the Old Pretender, it passed into the Jacobite family. James was the son of James II, the king who was deposed in 1688" (from the Royal Collection Trust website). 'The Sobieski Hours is one of the greatest yet least known monuments of French manuscript illumination at its most splendid period. It is now at Windsor Castle, among the other treasures of the Royal Library The manuscript was written for a noble patron who was probably called Marguerite. She may well have been the Marguerite de Bourgogne, eldest daughter of John the Fearless, who would have been Queen of France if her first husband had outlived his father, Charles VI' (prospectus). The first monographic study of the manuscript, and the first publication on it in English since 1906, the present volume reproduces all ninety-seven miniatures from the Sobieski Hours, accompanying a commentary by the art-historian Eleanor Patterson Spencer (18951992). Provenance: this copy printed for presentation to Adrian McLaughlin, with his name printed in red on the list of members of the Roxburghe Club. Language: English. …
