Trade paperback. Condition: Very good. D. Ernie Greenly (illustrator). Presumed First Edition, First printing. [6], xi, [1], 290 pages. Illustrations. Signed by the author (Greenly) on the title page. Slight cover wear. Frances Greenly-Hastings [1904-1984] was proud to be a state of Colorado Territorial Daughter. She culled many of the stories for this book from the diaries of her grandmother. Publishers' Note: Ernie Greenly is a satirist and is writing is and to create amusement and provoke thought. By no means take anything written by Ernie at face value. Donald Ernest Greenly was born in Longmont, in 1930, a fourth-generation Greenly, whose great-grandparents, Jesse Hamilton and Mellissa, had - in 1858 - acquired a 160-acre, land grant homestead south of Longmont before Longmont was Longmont and before the homestead was named Southmoor Park. Drafted in 1951 during the Korean War, he served as a camp librarian at the Port of Whittier, Alaska, passively resisting military protocol, at which he swore but never inhaled. Ernie found his niche in the economic scheme of things as a federal employee working below the Plimsoll-line in Washington, D.C., malingering tirelessly in the underground stacks of the U.S. Agriculture Department Library. He was finally recognized and awarded a United States Pink-slip for his dauntless dedication to federal work projects. In 1990 he returned to Longmont and spent his dotage attempting to slow the city's race into disgrace. Ernie fancied himself a talented writer, a fine poet, an accomplished artist and musician. His self-composed epitaph reads: Ernest the First Was considered the Worst, Until the world reckoned With Ernest the Second. Longmont is named after Longs Peak, a prominent mountain named for explorer Stephen H. Long that is clearly visible from Longmont, and "mont", from the French word "montagne" for mountain. Longmont was founded in 1871 by a group of people from Chicago, Illinois. Originally called the Chicago-Colorado Colony, led by president Robert Collyer, the men sold memberships in the town, purchasing the land necessary for the town hall with the proceeds. As the first planned community in Boulder County, the city streets were laid out in a grid plan within a square mile. The city began to flourish as an agricultural community after the Colorado Central Railroad line arrived northward from Boulder in 1877. During the 1940s, Longmont began to grow beyond these original limits.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Illustrated by Sarah Chamberlain (illustrator). Limited/Numbered Signed Edition. This very old, European folk tale is here retold with subtle humor by children's book author Kenneth Jones. The tale is of hungry travelers who are denied food by distrustful, selfish townspeople. The travelers produce their iron cooking pot, fill it with water and large stones, build a fire under it, and tell the townspeople that they're making a delicious stone soup that they will share with all. They pleasantly cajole someone into bringing them some garni to 'improve' the soup, then talk others into bringing some vegetables, then meats, seasonings, and everything required for a hearty soup that is ultimately shared and eaten by all. The travelers use the villagers' own foolish self-interest to trick them into collaboration that produces benefit for all. This is copy 137 of a limited edition of 150. Numbered and signed in pencil by the illustrator, printer, and publisher Sarah Chamberlain. 6 3/4" x 5 1/4". Unpaginated, but 31 pages. The tale is accompanied by 15 equally subtly humorous wood engravings cut by Sarah Chamberlain. Set in Garamond type and printed in black on cream, mould made, watermarked, Rives Lightweight paper. The engravings are printed in black, titles in brown, and wood engraved decorations in yellow. Printed by Chamberlain with assistance from Bill De Armond. Bound by Barbara Blumenthal in marbled paper over boards, with the water-based, earth-toned, and black marbling by Eileen Canning of Dancing Inks, Olympia, Washington. The 'random droplet' pattern of this paper is a creative departure from her many combed designs. Paper spine label. Laid in is the press' prospectus for this book. This excellent example of the press' work is in clean, sharp, and in Fine condition.; Wood engraving; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 31 pages; Signed by Illustrator.

One of a limited edition of 150 clothbound numbered copies, signed by the author and the illustrator, this copy being signed by both Rego and her daughter Willing, but unnumbered (I have yet to see a numbered copy and it may be that copies may not have been numbered as stated). Set in Monotype Baskerville and printed on 170gsm Artic Volume FSC paper by Hampton Printing (Bristol) Limited. Bound in cloth, lettered in gilt on spine, with illustration on label pasted to indented panel on front board and text on label pasted to indented panel on rear board, at The Fine Book Bindery, Northamptonshire. Fine copy, as issued. Note: "Full of the macabre touches and dark humour that have made Paula Rego's reputation, Stone Soup is a new version of the traditional Portuguese folktale by her daughter, the designer and writer, Cas Willing. Typically read to children to encourage cooperation in times of scarcity, the fable has existed in numerous incarnations for centuries. We follow the efforts of a young female traveller in her attempt to save herself from starvation, persuading suspicious townspeople to supply her with food for her mysterious Stone Soup. All thirteen watercolour and ink paintings are reproduced here, bringing together Rego's expressive cast of figures amidst their troubled landscape."--Publisher's website. Signed by Author(s).
