Condition: Wie neu. Aperture, New York. 2008. First edition, first printing. Signed by Michal Chelbin. Mint, new, unread; only opened for signature. Hardcover without dustjacket (as issued). A tipped-in photograph on the cover measures 8 ½ x 8 ½ inches. The book features an essay by Leah Ollman. It has 112 pages with 33 color and 22 duotone illustrations and measures 11 ¼ x 10 inches. Iranian photographer Michal Chelbin`s photographs "capture human stories in everyday life, those that exist in the space between the odd and the ordinary," she says. Evoking in an instant a wide variety of emotion, her enchanting images speak of the differences and similarities between us all. She takes photographs of groups of people, highlighting physical and visual contrasts between them. When photographing solo subjects, she generally removes them from their natural contexts (the circus, the theatre, the field), where they are still their performing "characters" but suddenly stripped of the safety of their team. Using their surprising appearances amidst the everyday, Chelbin explores the boundaries between fantasy and reality. From the Artist: "I try to create an informal scene, in which they directly confront the viewer. I feel they and their stories represent with most clarity the theme that interests me the most and which is the twilight zone between reality and fantasy. My aim is to record a scene where there is a mixture of direct information and enigmas and in which there are visual contrasts between young and old, large and small, normal and abnormal." From the Publisher: "In her sympathetic pictures of performers and wrestlers from small towns in Ukraine, Eastern Europe, England, and Israel, Michal Chelbin offers a glimpse into worlds both strange and familiar. The settings, costumes, and even some of the subjects themselves may seem exotic, but her portraits look beyond that to capture a transcendent sense of individual character." Chelbin`s most frequent subjects are children and adolescents, yet her work encompasses a mix of generations. As Leah Ollman notes, "The atmosphere falls somewhere between public and private. There`s a slight titillation of having personal access to performers who, typically, are experienced only remotely. Most immediate, though, are the visual contrasts between young and old, large and small, innocence and experience." The palette is intense, and intensely appealing, with a distinctive use of saturated pinks, blues, and greens. Chelbin`s black-and-white images, which are intermingled throughout the book, have an almost Pictorialist richness. Though her influences are evidentmost notably August Sander and Diane Arbusthe compelling photographs in Strangely Familiar, Chelbin`s first monograph, have a unique visual and emotional impact. This project was made possible, in part, through the generosity of the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation.***************Aperture, New York. 2008. Amerikanische Erstausgabe. Originalausgabe.
