The first edition of the work.Signed and inscribed by the author to the front free endpaper, dated '4th Dec 1920'.In publisher's original blue cloth binding.A collection of twentieth c…entury poetry by Max Plowman, a British writer and pacifist.Plowman signed up to the War despite deep moral misgivings about the rightness of war. Invalided out from the Western Front, he was treated for shell shock by W.H.R. Rivers, and refused to rejoin his unit in 1918. He was tried and dismissed by the army, being lucky to avid any further punishment. He became active in the Peace Pledge Union, and was editor of the New Adelph, striking up a close friendship with Orwell. In publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart. Fading to edges of boards and to spine, with slight bumping to the head and tail. Shelf wear to extremities, and odd small mark to rear board. Offsetting to endpapers, with author's ink inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with light spotting. Very Good. The folder containing the artist's six proofs (all signed by Howard Phipps) is similarly bound. Both items have dark brown end papers and are in fine condition. The accompanying slip case is covered in brown paper with two scuff marks to cover of one short edge. Otherwise it is in near-fine condition.
