Leather bound. Condition: Fair. First American Edition. Octavo. [1], xiii, 364 pages, 3 pages of advertisements. Brown calf leather binding with red leather title label on the spine. Leather binding is worn, rubbed, and scuffed in spots. Leather chipped top edge of the spine. An old previous owner paper label on the front paste down has been scratched out. Moderate scattered foxing, toning and damp stains to the contents. Faded black ink stamped name of W H Patterson Savannah, Ga on the front cover and front paste down. W. H. Patterson, from Savannah Georgia, was a member of the Savannah Bar. The author's name is not printed on the title page. The English author dedicated this book to the Right Honourable Lord Loughborough, Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain.

First American Edition. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 364 pages; 1st (only) American edition of a work originally published in London in 1798 and attributed to the Lincoln's Inn barrister, John Raithby. In contemporary full sheep binding, of which the boards remain in decent condition with light edge rubbing and a few small areas of skinning and scuffing to the surfaces. Leather spine is dried and perishing with chipping at crown and vertical cracking. Spine lables missing. Upper board only tenuously attached by one cord. Text block soundly bound and generally clean with expected light toning and a few superficial scattered instances of damp stain, a bit heavier to first and last few leaves. Prior ownership neatly in manuscript to front endpage. One of the first books on the study of the Law to appear in America. A good candidate for rebacking/restoration. Good only thus.
