Signed limited edition of this landmark in the field of photography. Elephant folio, original cloth, illustrated throughout, original publisher's stand. Signed by Helmut Newton on the title page. Edited by June Newton, supported with a Philippe Starck bookstand, and containing over 400 images, it covers every aspect of Newtonâs outstanding career, chronicling his groundbreaking fashion photography, definitive nudes, and celebrity portraiture. With the original shipping box. An exceptional example. âOf all the thousands of iconic books produced by TASCHEN, their greatest accomplishment is photographer Helmut Newtonâs Sumo. The sheer size and scale was an achievement in itself as it is the largest and most expensive book of the 20th century. In order to produce such a book, one needs vision and courage, not to mention the technical side of manufacturing and marketing" (Michael Chow).

Buch. Condition: Neu. New Yorker Museum of Modern Art.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Limited Edition. Koln: Taschen, 1999. Super elephant folio (50 x 70cm and weighing approx. 30kg). Original illustrated cloth with cover design by Angelika Taschen. Spine titled in blue. In matching pictorial dustjacket. Limited edition, numbered and signed by the artist. With chromo-plated book stand designed by Philippe Starck. Complete with over 400 photographic full-page plates, most of which are published here for the first time, covering Newton's prolific career as a photographer. Mint, in its original packing case, as issued. NOTE: Helmut Newton (1920-2004) was one of the 20th century's best-known fashion photographers. He was especially famous for his many studies of nude women. He established a particular style marked by erotic stylised scenes, often with sado-masochistic and fetishistic subtexts. Born in Berlin, Germany, the son of a Jewish garment factory owner, he fled Nazi Germany in 1938, working briefly as a photographer for the Straits Times in Singapore before serving with the Australian Army during WWII. In 1948 he married the Australian actress June Browne. Post war, he worked as a freelance photographer producing fashion shoots and work for magazines such as 'Playboy'. In 1961 he settled in Paris, where his career as a fashion photographer flourished. It was in Paris that his own particular style developed. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s his notoriety and fame greatly increased. In later life he lived in Monte Carlo and Los Angeles. Signed by Author(s).
