Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Stuttgart, Editions Medicina Rara, [c. 1975]/ 1714. Folio, xliv, 131 pages plus a frontispiece and 47 full-page plates. Quarter gilt-lettered red leather and black papered boards; covers a little sunned about the spine; a very good copy in the original sturdy slipcase (slightly bumped and rubbed). Copy number 2016 of 2300 copies bound in quarter-leather (with a further 500 copies bound in full leather). Facsimile reprint of the original 1714 edition. Together with the 20-page publisher's introductory pamphlet (front cover lightly creased). Bartolomeo Eustachius (circa 1510/20-1574) completed the plates in 1554. Less stylized than those of his contemporary and antagonist Vesalius, his anatomical illustrations are remarkably accurate despite his support of the old Galenic theories of anatomy. The copper plates remained unpublished in his lifetime and were rediscovered by Giovanni Maria Lancisi, the papal physician, who published them with his own commentaries in 1714. Garrison-Morton 391 (the 1714 edition, but the lengthy note includes the following comment: 'These copperplates are more accurate than the work of Vesalius. Singer was of the opinion that had they appeared in 1552 Eustachius would have ranked with Vesalius as one of the founders of modern anatomy. He discovered the Eustachian tube, the thoracic duct . and gave the first accurate description of the uterus'). Provenance: Professor Donald Simpson AO (1927-2018), eminent Australian neurosurgeon, with his bookplate.

Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Limited Edition. #95/2500. One of 500 copies full maroon leather, original lined slipcase, five spine bands, gilt titles, decoration, green top-stain. Facsimile reprint taken from the plates of the 1714 Lancisi first edition. Introduction states, "The anatomical copper-plates of the Italian doctor and anatomist Bartholomaeus Eustachius, though unpublished 150 years after their creation and forgotten by contemporary and succeeding generations alike, have been recognized since their sensational rediscovery and first publication by Lancisi in 1714 as a document of the greatest importance in the history of medicine. Eustachius subsequently achieved the reputation denied him during his lifetime as one of the significant founders of modern scientific anatomy - on a level with his famous predecessor Vesalius, upon whose pioneering work Eustachius elaborated in many details.".

Ldr.-Bd. der Zeit mit Rückenschild und Rückenvergoldung. Zweite Ausgabe. - Vgl. Garrison-Morton 391 (für Erstausgabe 1714): "A romantic history attaches to this fine collection of plates, drawn by Eustachius himself and completed in 1552. They remained unprinted and forgotten in the Vatican Library until discovered in the early 18th century and were then presented by Pope Clement XI to his physician, Giovanni Maria Lancisi. The latter published them in 1714 together with his own notes. These copperplates are more accurate than the work of Vesalius. Singer was of the opinion that had they appeared in 1552 Eustachius would have ranked with Vesalius as one of the founders of modern anatomy. He discovered the Eustachian tube, the thoracic duct, the adrenals and the abducens nerve, and gave the first accurate description of the uterus. He also described the cochlea, the muscles of the throat and the origin of the optic nerves." Bartolomeo Eustachi, lat. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Limited Edition Reprint. A brilliant facsimile exemplar of the Anatomicae Tabulae by Eustachius built upon reproduction of the copper-plate engraved illustrations done originally by Giulio de'Musi, "a Roman artist under the direction of Eustachius and his assistant [and relative] Pier Matteo Pini of Urbino" (K.B. Roberts) after the anatomical investigations of Eustachius done over a century and a half prior. The text that would have accompanied the plates was either never written or was lost and remains a mystery; later editors and publishers had perforce to supply an anatomical commentary. Eustachius was "physician to the Duke of Urbino and then to his brother, Cardinal Giuilio d'ella Rovere, in whose service he remained" until his death in 1574, having taught medicine and anatomy in the medical school at Rome (the Sapienza), probably his own Alma Mater (K.B. Roberts). The work was published first in 1714 under his Latin name Bartholomaei Eustachi[i], but had been completed 140 years prior. This exemplar was published in 1975 by Editions Medicina Rara Ltd. (T. Laqueur), London, printed for them by Druckerei Holzer, Weiler im Allgau, from a binding in full burgundy calfskin leather done for them in Stuttgart, West Germany, at the bindery of Richard Mayer. This copy is from the library of eminent Sydney, New South Wales neurosurgeon Dr John Sheehy, an uncommonly accomplished book collector and medico-legal authority, according to the previous owner, the noted paleographer and squidinkulist Andrea Boltresz. Currently only one additional copy available on-line of this Special Limited Reprint Edition of 2500 copies that was split further into an edition of only 300 done in full leather, this being Copy #CCLXVI (#166). Tall folio format, measuring 14" tall and 10" wide. Spine augmented with five raised bands, gilt titling in compartments, quite sharply done, fine publisher's device also in gilt at front cover, perhaps an artistic take on a system of body parts? The black-and-white plates are reproduced from a copy of the original 1714 "Lancisi edition" that belonged once to the so-called Wurttembergische Landesbibliothek, Stuttgart (says the colophon), "Lancisi" being D. J. Mariam Lancisium, physician to Pope Clement, thanked profusely and multiply at Preface and elsewhere. This copy is in Fine condition, marred only by one slightly noticeable and three extremely faint hints of foxing at fore-edge. Housed in the publisher's original paper-covered cardboard slipcase that has performed well. Text wholly in Latin, a deep, sharp, satisfying bite of the font to the brilliant special-made paper of Papierfabrik Scheufelen, Oberlenningen, West Germany. Illustrations are each numbered in Roman numerals and in full-page format, and with full-page legend opposite, detailing each of the numbered parts of anatomy depicted herein, from heart valves to limbic arteries, musculature to facial expressions, blood to organs, tissue to muscles. The author, Bartolomeo Eustachii (c. 1500-1510 - 1574) was an Italian anatomist and is said to be one of the Holy Trinity of the science of human anatomy and physiology (Eustachius, Vesalius and the "other" Columbus) and whose founders disagreed mightily on both empirical and ideal-philosophical conceptions of the body including Aristotle, Galen, Fallopius, and other giants. Ione writes, "As noted, the Egyptian, Biblical, and early Greek thinkers largely assigned cognition and sensation to the heart, rather than the brain" (Handbook of Clinical Neurology, 2010). Somewhat strangely, for Eustachius, though an empiricist, his illustrations based on dissections of cadavers that took place on an anatomy table. Whereas the figures of Vesalius "attempt to copy the natural appearance of anatomical structures," says K.B. Roberts, "Eustachius' figures are maps of human anatomy . . . " Eustachius is most famous for revealing the vena caval ("Eustachian valve") and the thoracic canal, for theorizing the difference between healthy and disease-altered organs, and after him was named the Eustachian tube that drains the ear. The illustrations here resulted from his collaboration with his relative and his pupil, Pier Matteo Pini; together they produced nearly four dozen detailed anatomical drawings of the organs and muscles involved, named the Tabulae Anatomicae Clariviri (T. Laqueur, K.B. All in, a most handsome, tall volume paying due homage to 16th-century anatomy and physiology, art and collaboration.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.

In Folio (mm 380x265); pagg. (4), V- LX, 128, (2 erroneamente numerate); 47 eleganti tavole anatomiche incise finemente in rame fuori testo e numerate in lastra. V; capolettera, testatine e finalini silografici.

Folio. xliv, 115, [14] p. 47 plates. First edition. Contemporary calf, rubbed but sound. Rebacked at some time and the old label re-laid. Title page with an engraved vignette of a dissection scene. As usual this copy doesn't have the unnumbered plate of a graduated scale which was intended to be cut out. A few signs of use and occasional faint spotting. Damp mark in the blank margins, mostly towards the end of the volume. Small closed tear at the foot of the final Index leaf. A large, unpressed copy. Overall a good copy in sound useable condition. The plates were produced in the 1550s from Eustachi's drawings but most remained unpublished until rediscovered in the early 18th century when this edition appeared with Lancini's notes.

Fine thick quality paper, impressions clear & dark, and the binding of plain but sympathetic quality. *A splendid anatomical atlas with few equals. The plates were probably engraved in 1552 by Eustachius in collaboration with Agostino de Musis but only the first few were published in his lifetime. They lay forgotten and lost until rediscovered by Giovanni Maria Lancisi but without any accompanying text. Lancisi wrote text and had them published at Rome in 1714. The accuracy of the design & detail of these plates greatly surpass the woodcut drawings of Vesalius as Eustachius used copperplates which allowed for greater precision. The progress of anatomy might have been accelerated had these plates appeared in the 16th century. Eustachius was considered the most scientific anatomist of his time and unlike Vesalius his plates show a composit of anatomical types based on the study of many cadavers where as Vesalius showed the anatomy of one body. Unique to Eustachius' anatomy was the marginal graduated scale which gave the key to the explanatory text. He also juxtaposed anterior and posterior views (see Garrison & Morton 391, Wellcome II 536, Heirs of Hippocrates 201). 1 volume. Hardcover.

CCXXXVIII der 500 Ex. in Ganzleder. - «Bartolomeo Eustachi, lat.
