Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Limited Edition. #95/2500. One of 500 copies full maroon leather, original lined slipcase, five spine bands, gilt titles, decoration, green top-stain. Facsimile reprint taken from the plates of the 1714 Lancisi first edition. Introduction states, "The anatomical copper-plates of the Italian doctor an…d anatomist Bartholomaeus Eustachius, though unpublished 150 years after their creation and forgotten by contemporary and succeeding generations alike, have been recognized since their sensational rediscovery and first publication by Lancisi in 1714 as a document of the greatest importance in the history of medicine. Eustachius subsequently achieved the reputation denied him during his lifetime as one of the significant founders of modern scientific anatomy - on a level with his famous predecessor Vesalius, upon whose pioneering work Eustachius elaborated in many details.".

First edition. One of the Most Important Anatomical Books ever Printed. First edition of one of the most important of all anatomical books, and the only publication of any of Bartolomeo Eustachi's anatomical plates in his own lifetime - eight plates of an engraved series of forty-seven that Eustachi and his draughtsman Pier Matt…eo Pini had prepared in 1552, and whose full publication would have placed Eustachi alongside Andreas Vesalius as a co-founder of modern anatomical science. Of the forty-seven plates, only these eight accompanied printed text during the author's lifetime; the remaining thirty-nine were bequeathed to Pini, lost for over a century, rediscovered in the early eighteenth century, and not given to the scientific world until Giovanni Maria Lancisi's Tabulae anatomicae of 1714. The present volume is therefore the printed fragment of an unfinished programme, and the only sixteenth-century witness to the anatomical illustration that Eustachi had himself overseen. ABPC/RBH records no copy of the first edition at auction since the Norman copy at Christie's New York, 18 March 1998, lot 85, which realised $40,250 in spite of a patched margin and a dampstained title; before that, only two copies are recorded, in 1991 and 1976. The Opuscula collects six treatises written between 1561 and 1563. Two of them - Ossium examen and De motu capitis, both composed in 1561 - are polemical defences of Galenic anatomy against the perceived hostility of Vesalius's Fabrica; the other four are Eustachi's own substantive anatomical investigations, and they are what has secured the book its standing. They are, in the order of the volume: De renum structura, the first monograph ever devoted to the kidney, with the first printed description of the suprarenal glands; De auditus organis, the first post-classical description of the organ of hearing; De vena quae azygos graecis dicitur, which contains the first printed description of the thoracic duct and of the valvula venae cavae at the entrance of the inferior vena cava into the right atrium (the Eustachian valve of modern anatomy); and, with its own separate title-page dated 1563, the Libellus de dentibus, the first book ever devoted to the teeth. Pier Matteo Pini's 168 pages of classical Annotationes to Eustachi's own writings - dedicated to his master in July 1561, and gathering testimonia from Hippocrates, Aristotle, Galen, and the later medical authorities - close the volume. The eight plates were engraved by Giulio de' Musi of Rome, probably a relation of Agostino de' Musi (Agostino Veneziano), from designs prepared by Eustachi and Pini in 1552 for a projected larger work entitled De dissensionibus ac controversiis anatomicis, the text of which was lost after Eustachi's death in 1574. The remaining thirty-nine plates of the 1552 series had been bequeathed to Pini along with the draft text; Marcello Malpighi, among others, is reported to have searched for them unsuccessfully. They were found at last in the possession of a descendant of Pini in the early eighteenth century, more than one hundred and sixty years after their engraving. Pope Clement XI acquired the plates for six hundred scudi, presented them to his personal physician Giovanni Maria Lancisi (1654-1720) - Eustachi's successor in the chair of anatomy at the Sapienza - and, on the advice of Giovanni Battista Morgagni, Lancisi published the full series for the first time in 1714 under the title Tabulae anatomicae Bartholomaei Eustachii quas a tenebris tandem vindicatas ('Anatomical Plates of Bartolomeo Eustachi, at Last Rescued from Obscurity'). The plates were then seen to be rigorously anatomical, stripped of decorative framing, and ruled on three sides with numbered coordinate scales in a manner that struck eighteenth-century viewers as well ahead of their time. Relatively little is known of Bartolomeo Eustachi himself. He was born at San Severino - most probably Sanseverino Marche, in the district of Ancona, though some authorities have placed his birth in San Severino in Calabria - in a year variously given as 1500, 1505, 1510, 1513 (perhaps the most probable), 1520, or 1524. He was the son of Mariano Eustachi, a well-known physician of noble family, and Francesca Benvenuti Eustachi. Mariano insisted upon a well-rounded humanist education, in the course of which the younger Eustachi acquired a command of Greek, Hebrew, and Arabic sufficient to edit an edition of the Hippocratic glossary of Erotian (1566) and, reportedly, to translate Avicenna directly from the Arabic. He is believed to have studied medicine at the Archiginnasio della Sapienza in Rome, and to have begun to practise medicine around 1540. His abilities were soon noticed by the Duke of Urbino, who retained him as his personal physician; in 1547 Eustachi transferred to the service of the duke's brother, Cardinal Giulio della Rovere, with whom he removed to Rome in 1549. There he became protomedico, and joined the medical faculty of the Collegio della Sapienza as the equivalent of professor of anatomy. The position granted him access to cadavers from the hospitals of Santo Spirito and Consolazione, and the anatomical programme of the Opuscula was the fruit of the dissections thereby made possible. In his later years Eustachi was severely afflicted by gout, and was eventually obliged to resign his Sapienza chair; but he continued to serve the cardinal, and it was in answer to della Rovere's summons to Fossombrone in 1574 that he set out on the journey which proved to be his last. Eustachi's relationship to Vesalius was, and remains, a matter of no little complication. The two men were exact contemporaries, working on the human body at the same high level and within the same broad humanist-medical programme; but where Vesalius mounted a systematic critique of Galen on the basis of his own dissections, Eustachi retained a more conservative reverence for the ancient authority and argued, in Ossium examen and De motu capitis, that Vesalius.

Pl.20 minor offsetting from facing text page. As usual without the unnumbered page meant to be cut out and used to rule the scale. Fine thick quality paper, impressions clear & dark, and the binding of plain but sympathetic quality. *A splendid anatomical atlas with few equals. The plates were probably engraved in 1552 by Eustachius in collaboration with Agostino de Musis but only the first few were published in his lifetime. They lay forgotten and lost until rediscovered by Giovanni Maria Lancisi but without any accompanying text. Lancisi wrote text and had them published at Rome in 1714. The accuracy of the design & detail of these plates greatly surpass the woodcut drawings of Vesalius as Eustachius used copperplates which allowed for greater precision. The progress of anatomy might have been accelerated had these plates appeared in the 16th century. Eustachius was considered the most scientific anatomist of his time and unlike Vesalius his plates show a composit of anatomical types based on the study of many cadavers where as Vesalius showed the anatomy of one body. Unique to Eustachius' anatomy was the marginal graduated scale which gave the key to the explanatory text. He also juxtaposed anterior and posterior views (see Garrison & Morton 391, Wellcome II 536, Heirs of Hippocrates 201). 1 volume. Hardcover.
