Add to basket8vo (189 x 120mm), pp. vi, 36; with an engraved frontispiece portrait by W. Collard after W. Nicholson; with blank leaves at end on which are mounted numerous small press cuttings with woodcut initials; bound in olive straight-grain morocco by C. Lewis, covers with J.T. Brockett's arms in gilt. One of the publications of the Newcastle Typographical Society: this edition apparently consisted of 100 copies only, plus 1 in small 4to. It reprints a Civil War pamphlet of 1644 (Wing P607). The principal editor for the series, and of this reprint, was John Trotter Brockett, who had commissioned the vignette of an arch and an armorial shield from Bewick in 1817. Tattersfield comments that it is 'frequently imagined to be a bookplate'. Not listed in Tattersfield, but see TB 2.153. See Lowndes vol. IV, Appendix p. 163, item 60. Provenance. This appears to be Brockett's own copy: it has his arms in gilt on the covers, and has clearly been expensively bound by Charles Lewis. It later belonged to E.W. Ganderton, scholar of stained glass, who was apparently responsible for mounting the numerous cuttings from late 18th c newspapers on the blank endleaves.
