See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The recipient Philip Dosse was proprietor of Hansom Books, publisher of a stable of seven arts magazines including Books and Bookmen and Plays and Players. See 'Death of a Bookman' by the novelist Sally Emerson (editor of 'Books and Bookmen' at the time of Dosse's suicide), in Standpoint magazine, October 2018. The present item is 2pp, 8vo. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Signed 'John Rothenstein'. He believes that Dosse asked him 'to review the John books' (Michael Holroyd's biography of Augustus John, and his book with Malcolm Easton on John's art) for Art and Artists. 'I don't think I'm dreaming as have some copies wh. you sent me at the time. I believe I explained that exceptional demands would make it difficult & I've also received an intimation that one of the Sunday papers is planning to invite me to do a special feature on the two books, but I'm not at all sure whether I shall be able to accept.' Dosse is 'quite right in supposing that the Easton volume will be by no means complete'.

A rare and striking signed copy of the catalogue for Francis Bacon's 1985 Tate Gallery exhibition. Signed in his bold, energetic hand, this is a remarkable example of Bacon's elusive autographhe was never one to sign freely, making such pieces exceptionally scarce. His signature carries the same raw intensity that defines his work, making this a compelling artifact for collectors of modern art. One of very few Tate catalogues to be found signed. Condition: First edition, first printing. Large quarto in illustrated stiff card covers. A scarce and exceptionally well-preserved copy, featuring over 100 finely printed color illustrations, including approximately 110 full-page plates and 21 fold-out leaves showcasing Bacon's triptychs. Also includes an extensive bibliography. Loosely inserted is a printed note listing the exhibition sponsors. A rare opportunity to own a signed piece from one of the 20th century's most influential painters.

Joan Miro - Signed & Inscribed Exhibition Poster "An Art Council -Tate Gallery " - Framed - 1964 ** Hand signed by Miro lower left. With dedication Amicalement a Christian (kind regards to Christian). Professionally framed in exclusive wooden frame with PLEXIGLAS Optical HC, scratch-resistant and UV-protected. Framed approx. 80 x 55 cm. ** This striking exhibition poster was created for Joan Miró s 1964 retrospective at The Tate Gallery, London. Held from August 28 to October 11, 1964, this exhibition was organized by the Arts Council of Great Britain and celebrated Miró's significant contributions to modern art. * The poster features Miró s unmistakable abstract, calligraphic style, dominated by bold black strokes, a vivid red background, and splashes of yellow and green. The dynamic composition reflects the spontaneity and expressive energy that define his work. His signature biomorphic forms, surrealist influences, and gestural brushstrokes are evident, reinforcing his reputation as one of the most innovative artists of the 20th century. * This exhibition marked an important moment in Miró s career, solidifying his global influence and expanding his recognition in the British art scene. As a rare original vintage poster, it remains highly collectible, particularly when hand-signed. It embodies Miró s artistic philosophy, merging playfulness, symbolism, and surrealist abstraction. * Miró (1893 1983) was a Catalan painter, sculptor, and printmaker, widely known for his Surrealist and abstract works that often incorporated cosmic themes, organic shapes, and dreamlike symbolism. His impact on modern art is profound, influencing artists across movements from Abstract Expressionism to contemporary street art. *** SHIPPING: Worldwide shipping available *** CONDITION: in very good condition ***.
