Add to basket8vo, pp. xvi, 146, [1] errata; last two pages of text incorrectly paginated 146-145; first and last leaves laid down and rather stained, but complete; occasional stains throughout; in later drab boards, new calf spine. First edition, and very rare, although the same book was printed as a quarto (one copy only recorded, at the Huntington), and these sheets were reissued as part of The Diverting Jumble (1747), by 'Obadiah Bookworm', which was a collection of remainder sheets of previous publications - naturally enough, copies vary according to how many of each remainder the bookseller could get hold of. The present collection consists of two sections: the first prints The False Guardians Outwitted, a play in the popular ballad opera style which was probably never actually performed; the second is a collection of miscellaneous songs and poems, one of them addressed to Pope and another to the methodist George Whitefield - who is addressed as 'Prebend of Moor-Fields, Dean of Kennington-Common, and Bishop of Georgia' (to which he had recently travelled for the first time). Unusually for a book like this, it was issued by subscription, and the list is found on pp. xi-xvi. Among the few people to order more than one copy was Joseph Goodall, which is perhaps why this collection has been attributed to William Goodall. A certain W. Goodall published a picaresque novel The Adventures of Capt. Greenland in 1752, and he may be the same person - or, of course, this book may not be by anyone called Goodall. In his preface the author claims to have come from Worcester to London as a penniless apprentice from Worcester; he had been helped by Samuel Sandys, the MP for Worcester, and the Duchess of Ancaster; when in despair he also remembered the example of Dick Whittington. Copies of this book are rare, though there may be two or more issues depending on the presence of the errata leaf and the pagination at the end being corrected. ESTC locates copies of these issues at: BL, Bodleian (two copies, but both incomplete), Harvard, Folger, Clark, Illinois and Rice.
