Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. They were American and British air force officers in a German prison camp. With only their bare hands and the crudest of homemade tools, they sank shafts, forged passports, faked weapons, and tailored German uniforms and civilian clothes. They developed a fantastic security system to protect themselves from German surveillance. It was a split-second operation as delicate and as deadly as a time bomb. It demanded the concentrated devotion and vigilance of more than six hundred menevery one of them, every minute, every hour, every day and night for more than a year. Made into the classic 1963 war film of the same name starring Steve McQueen, James Garner, and Richard Attenborough. "A tense, thrilling, fabulous tale." Add to basket8vo., First Edition, with 16 plates on 8, 6 illustrations and plans (5 full-page) and full-page map in the text; salmon cloth, backstrip lettered in blue, a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. The original account of arguably the greatest POW story of WWII - the escape of no fewer than seventy-six Allied POW's from Stalag Luft III at Sagan in March 1944. Known ever since as the 'Great Escape', it was a gallant endeavour with a sordid ending, and has inspired a minor industry of research and publication, including John Sturges' immensely successful (though heavily fictionalised) feature film of 1963 starring Steve McQueen and Richard Attenborough. For a more recent update (incorporating the latest official documentation) see Burgess's 'The Longest Tunnel' (1990). AN UNDISPUTED CLASSIC OF WWII AND VERY SCARCE INDEED IN THIS CONDITION.

Add to basketA first edition, first printing published by Faber in 1951. A very good book with eraed name to the front pastedown - some fading to the boards and a little spotting to the page block. In a very good dust wrapper with a little wear to the corners and spine tips and creasing. One neat closed tear to the top of the front panel - thin stain to the top of the rear panel. Paul Brickhill's "The Great Escape" remains a significant part of modern culture through its enduring influence on films, TV, and literature. The 1963 film adaptation is a classic, spawning iconic scenes and inspiring countless prison escape dramas. The phrase "The Great Escape" is a metaphor for audacious efforts. Brickhill's book set a standard for recounting wartime heroism, and the story continues to be commemorated in events and documentaries. It has left an indelible mark, keeping the memory of the real-life escape attempts alive and serving as a symbol of human resilience in the face of adversity.
