With 'Rokeby' and 'The Vision of Don Roderick' bound together in volume IV. 'Lay of the Last' is an Eighth edition and stated to title page, 'Marmion' is a first edition with half-titles. Lacking publisher"s adverts. 'The Lady of the Lake' is a first edition, later printing. Does not have the issue points regarding canto six. 'Rokeby', is a first edition first printing, a scarce work which had only 25 copies of the large-paper edition printed. With the issue points of page 39 being correctly numbered, page 81 shows the signature as a capital L with the press figure 7. Page 329 has the signature "2T". This copy has publisher"s adverts stating new editions of Scott"s works and also a list of illustration volumes that can be purchased to be bound in with the poems and is complete with half-titles. "The Vision of Don Roderick" is present to the rear of this volume. This is the first edition, first impression with line two of page three beginning "May swell". This copy has been bound without publisher"s adverts so cannot establish any further issue points. Does however, have its half titles. The Lord of the Isles is a First Edition with the watermark "W Balston 1814" to page 38, Page 37 line 8 has an inverted quotation mark before "Till". Page 87 has the press figure "10" to the bottom of the page. With half-titles. Only 'Rokeby' has its publisher's adverts. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper to all volumes, Robert Stedder. None of these volumes are illustrated. Sir Walter Scott is a celebrated historical novelist, poet and author. Several of these poems were inspired by historical events. 'The Lay of the Last Minstrel' is a long narrative poem written in six cantos. It is a romance in the Gothic style. And discusses a tale of a sixteenth century Border feud. 'Marmion' is a historical romance regarding 16th century Britain and the Battle of Flodden. 'The Lady of the Lake' is set in the Trossachs region of Scotland. Each canto of this six canto poem concerns the action of a single day. 'The Vision of Don Roderick' celebrated the Duke of Wellington's victories during the Peninsular War. 'Rokeby' is set in Teesdale during the English Civil War and tells the tale of attacks on castles and the Lord Rokeby. 'The Lord of the Isles' is another narrative poem by Scott, which regards Robert Bruce. In uniform full calf bindings. Externally, worn. Heavy rubbing to the spines of all volumes resulting in large portions of loss to the leather. To volumes I, II, III and IV both boards are detached but present. To volume V the front board is detached but present. The rear hinge and joint are weak and held by one cord only. Front endpaper to volume I is loosening. Inscription of one M K Fortescue to the verso of front endpaper to volume I. Prior owner"s inscription, "Robert Stedder" to the recto of front endpaper of all volumes. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Heavy scattered spotting to the first and last few pages to volume II. Otherwise, all volumes have just the occasional light spots to pages. Fair. book.
