Book has been well-preserved due to the slipcase, but quite fragile due to age which is estimated around 1900's. (see pics.) Synopsis: Toilers of the Sea (French: Les Travailleurs de la mer) is a novel by Victor Hugo published in 1866. The book is dedicated to the island of Guernsey, where Hugo spent 15 years in exile. Hugo uses the setting of a small island community to transmute seemingly mundane events into drama of the highest calibre. Les Travailleurs de la Mer is set just after the Napoleonic Wars and deals with the impact of the Industrial Revolution upon the island. The story concerns a Guernseyman named Gilliatt, a social outcast who falls in love with Deruchette, the niece of a local shipowner, Mess Lethierry. When Lethierry's ship is wrecked on the Roches Douvres, a perilous reef, Deruchette promises to marry whoever can salvage the ship's steam engine. Gilliatt eagerly volunteers, and the story follows his physical trials and tribulations (which include a battle with an octopus), as well as the undeserved opprobrium of his neighbours.

In fine condition with light sunning to the spine. Translated from the French by Isabel F. Hapgood. Introduction by Matthew Josephson. Illustrated by engraver Tranquillo Marangoni. Victor Hugo (1802â"1885) remains one of France's most celebrated writers, renowned for his contributions to literature during the Romantic era. His works, which included novels, plays, and poetry, often explored themes of justice, social inequality, and human resilience. The Toilers of the Sea (1866) is a romantic and symbolic novel that exemplifies the authorâs enduring preoccupations with individual heroism, the sublime power of nature, and the moral dimensions of human suffering. Written during his political exile on the island of Guernsey, the novel reflects both Hugoâs deep admiration for the sea and his sense of alienation from society. Hugo uses the dramatic seascapes and perilous salvaging expedition not only to showcase manâs confrontation with the elements, but also to explore inner resilience, unrequited love, and existential isolation.
