A fine original colour lithograph from Vanity Fair, a magazine which was published from 1869-1914, featuring a large caricature portrait each week. These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". This portrait will come mounted/matted and ready to frame using archivist quality materials, mount size 18 x 12 inches, 47 x 31 cms. It will be presented in a cellophane wrapper with our label guaranteeing authenticity. We pack very well, between sheets of hardboard. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a portrait of Louis Thiers, with the caption "Faute-de-mieux Premier", together with a page of biographical detail. Louis-Adolphe Thiers (Marseille, 16 April 1797-3 September 1877) was a French politician and historian. Thiers was a prime minister under King Louis-Philippe of France.

Original cloth which appears to have once been muted purple at board centers but now with color fading to light brown toward board edges and to spine, shallow staining at tops of boards, spine ends bumped with short tears at head, spine's gilt lettering dulled but still legible. Edges toned; light moisture stain to top edge affecting rear third of leaves at their upper margins; foxing and toning most prevalent to initial and rear leaves with some scattered soiling and stains; top fore-edge corner of pages 77-78 creased from past fold-down. Binding still retains some crispness. Still an attractive very good antiquarian copy. With publisher's advertisements on light yellow endpapers along with 18+1 pages of publisher's ads at book's rear. French politician and historian Adolphe Thiers served twice as Prime Minister under King Louis Philippe I and as the second President of the French Republic from August 1871 to May 1873. Frank S. Fiske translated THE MISSISSIPPI BUBBLE from the original French.

Gladstone uvra à faire du Royaume-Uni une démocratie parlementaire accomplie, fondée sur l'alternance politique. Lettre autographe signée, 4 p in 8, 5 octobre 1871, en tête « Aboyne Castle, Aberdeenshire N B », adressée à Miss g Weldon* (l amie de Gounod), en anglais, fente au bas de la pliure centrale. Gladstone répond à 2 requêtes à Miss Weldon, l une concernant sa mise en relations avec le célèbre homme politique français Adolphe Thiers, Président de la République Française après la chute de l Empire, avec lequel il n a eu que peu de rapports jusqu à présent. L autre concerne Gounod et la musique, Gladstone évoque notamment la « perfection de l art musical ». [] I am afraid I must ask you to [take] other [for] a personal introduction to M. Thiers simply because my acquaintance with him has been so light and formal []. With respect to your second request, after reading M.
