Why has an artist of such renown in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries been relegated to a minor place in the history of English art? These are the questions Shelley M. Bennett addresses in her study of Stothard and of how his work reveals the changing nature of the artist's role in the increasingly industrialized society of turn-of-the-century England. Bennett examines the ways in which Stothard catered to the market in history paintings, ceramics, silverwork, landscape, sculpture, and, above all, book illustration. She also explores his long and intimate association with John Flaxman and William Blake, the context in which he is perhaps best known today. By examining Stothard's commercial practices, Bennett determines that the basis of his prolific employment lay in his market-conscious attitude to his wor.
