See his entry in the Oxford DNB. ONE: Autograph draft of conclusion of description of his meeting with Mehmet Ali ('Mehemet Ali'). The ODNB states that in July 1836 Cobden produced a pamphlet 'which analysed the Russo-Turkish dispute [.] attempting to play down the Turcophilia that was rife in Britain in the 1830s. In October Cobden embarked on a long tour, sailing via Lisbon, Gibraltar, and Malta to the eastern end of the Mediterranean, as far as Constantinople, meeting Mehmet Ali in Egypt, before returning via Greece in April 1837.' The present text is the conclusion of the draft manuscript of the account he gave of that meeting and had published in Tait's Edinburgh Magazine in November 1838. 1p, foolscap 8vo. The page is headed '20' and carries ten lines of text, one and a half lines of which are deleted. Lightly aged, worn and creased. On reverse, in pencil, in a contemporary hand: 'Cobden / M. S. S His work in Turkey'. The text reads (with deleted passage in square brackets): 'Often in recurring to my interview with this extraordinary man, [- the spring-like elasticity of whose mind evinces its power in proportion as it is pressed -] and recollecting the eagerness of his enquiries upon practical subjects, - as well as the vehemence of manner with which he sustained his opinions - evincing the spring-like elasticity of mind which manifests its power in proportion as it is pressed - I think with pleasure of the refreshing & animating scene, not unmixed with regret that I shall probably never again have the opportunity of chatting with old Mehemet Ali'. TWO: Slip of paper cut from the beginning of a letter in the third person, with reverse blank. In fair condition, lightly aged. Reads: 'Mr Cobden presents his compliments to Mr Cornwall Lewis, & begs to forward for presentation to the Lords of the Treasury, a memorial'. THREE: Printed form response with thick black border. 1p, 32mo. In fair condition, on discoloured paper. Reads (with manuscript text in square brackets): '[Mr & Mrs Cobden] return thanks for the favor of [Mr Smiths] kind enquiries. / [Midhurst 20 June 1856]'. (The word 'return' has been altered from 'returns'.).

Various sizes. Various sizes. Daniel Boone (1734-1820), born near Reading, Pennsylvania, is known as a great pioneer and Indian fighter. His family left for North Carolina in 1750 and settled in Buffalo Lick the following year. Boone spent several years working for his father, a blacksmith and stock-raiser, and then in 1755 began his travels when he joined a North Carolina contingent in the Braddock campaign. Stories he heard from his companion, John Finley, filled him with desire for pioneering the Kentucky wilderness, but after a disastrous battle, he returned home and married Rebeccah Bryan, a neighbor. In 1767, Boone and a couple of men headed westward to explore. They returned home and that same year Finley happened by and Boone and Finley made new plans to head for Kentucky. They commenced their journey in 1769, set up camp at Station Camp Creek, and after many adventures returned home in 1771. From that point forward, Boone set out for the west on a regular basis, accompanying various parties and settlers on their journeys. He brought his family to settle in Kentucky in 1775, and was made a captain and then a major in the militia once the region became a county of Virginia. He battled the Indians, was captured by the Shawnee in 1778, but later escaped and continued to accompany new settlers into the area. Kentucky was divided into three counties the next year and Boone was made lieutenant-colonel of Fayette County and later chosen as a delegate to the legislature. Boone's skill as a pioneer far outweighed his ability to manage his affairs, for, although he had taken up many tracts of land, they had all been improperly entered and after a series of suits over a number of years, lost all of the land. He left Kentucky and settled in West Virginia, where he was appointed lieutenant-colonel of the county and later selected as its legislative delegate. Around 1789, he moved to Missouri to join his son, Daniel Morgan, where he was soon elected to public office. After Boone's wife died in 1813, he lived mostly at the home of his other son, Nathan. Boone is remembered as a great pioneer for having "the most qualities needed on the frontiercourage in a rare degree, great fortitude, an iron endurance, a mastery of woodcraft, and single expertness with the rifle. He was loyal in friendship, honest, truthful, and modest. He was one of the most respected and beloved of the nation's heroes." (DAB). Each document folded several times, very short minor tears or chipping mostly at folds, overall very good.

"Magnificently coarse" and a formidable Philadelphia Boss and Senator, Boies Penrose (18601921), i.e. "Big Grizzly," dominated the Gilded Age world of Pennsylvania Republican politics for thirty years. Penrose was literally larger-than-life, at six foot four he was an enormously obese man with an extraordinary intellect and an even more extraordinary appetite. Purportedly, Penrose would routinely eat a dozen eggs for breakfast with twelve rolls, copious coffee and a huge slab of ham. Graduated from Harvard, the name of "Big Grizzly" stuck while hunting in Wyoming with his brother "the latter was badly mauled by a bear; [and] disregarding the advice of the guides, Boies carried him out of the wilderness on his shoulders." A big game hunting enthusiast, later in life he had to have a special horse and saddle because of his girth. Largely friendless, nationalistic, nativist, cynical, ethical yet corrupt ("One of his favorite schemes, the "squeeze bill," extracted large campaign contributions from wealthy industries by threatening them with punitive legislation near election time." ANB), Penrose was more interested in power than self-gain. He was a large figure on the national stage, promoting Big Business interests, knocking down labor rights, fighting against woman suffrage, Prohibition and the income tax, and helping to promote Theodore Roosevelt's nomination as vice president under McKinley. Yet he disliked Roosevelt ("a cock-eyed little runt") and Woodrow Wilson ("a schoolmarm") and he was rumored to have thrown the 1920 presidential nomination to Warren Harding. Penrose was scrupulous with having all correspondence addressed to him replied to promptly. He relied on a bevy of secretaries and was one of the first major politicians to understand the power of the telephone, racking up monthly thousands of dollars in bills. "Public office is the last refuge of a scoundrel" is perhaps the most famous Penrose quote. ANB observes: "The last of the big bosses, he valued political power above all else, including friendship and statesmanship.". 1) Autograph manuscript: 4pp., on 8vo U.S. Senate sheets in pencil, dated 24 Aug. 1904. 2) TLS, from W.
