Heavy Duty Press (illustrator). 7.5" x 14" inches. sewn stiff paper wrappers, cloth string bag. 28 pages. Limited to 40 copies signed and numbered by the printer. A fine copy. The type is hand set in original ATF Century Schoolbook, with ornamental border sorts, two fleurons, and a wise old owl, printed in three passes on Zerkall Frankfurt Cream with black, green, and brown ink. From the printer: Many years ago, I had a strange and vivid dream, which of course I cannot remember now. What I can remember is that I immediately went to my computer and started to search specific things from the dream that seemed important, and I ultimately landed on Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), by Jerome K. Jerome. I bought a vintage copy of the book and it became one of the first books to be read serially, with a Wisconsinites version of the English accent, live on the radio. When it came time to think of something appropriate to print for The Oxford Fine Press Book Fair, it seemed fitting to use a quote from the book, as it is set on the River Thames near Oxford. To my delight, three copies of the print were sold at the fair, one gentleman remarked that it was a favorite book of his Oxford colleagues, and the print earned the prize for "Best Single Sheet or Piece of Ephemera" at the Fair in 2022. sewn stiff paper wrappers, cloth string bag.

Although best remembered for its hilarious incidents and anecdotes, Jerome's story is also packed with detail and information concerning places visited, fads and fashions of the day, popular songs, shows and books. These contemporary allusions are annotated and explained by two modern-day humourists, Benny Green and Christopher Matthew. They have provided a virtual social history of the late nineteenth century which, combined with the many contemporary photographs and engravings, enhances even further the undisputed pleasure of reading the original book'.

First Edition. THREE MEN IN A BOAT (TO SAY NOTHING OF THE DOG), Arrowsmith, 1889, first edition, spine darkened with wear at the extremities, covers at fore edge lightened, a near good copy in the publishers original cloth. Illustrated. Previously Robert Heinlein's copy with his hand-written notation at the base of the first page of ads listing the publishers new authors and titles stating "After 100 years these two are the only authors I recognize -RAH." Of the list of 37 titles and their authors above, he has starred both Wilkie Collins and Brander Mathews. On the half-title page is Heinleins gift inscription to his early biographer, Wells scholar and fellow author, Leon Stover, mentioning the 3 men of the title by name. Heinlein presented this book to Stover cryptically stating that "if you read this, you will then understand me !!!" (See Robert A. Heinlein In Dialogue With His Century: 1948 -1988 The Man Who Learned Better: Vol 2, page 459). Also laid in is a photocopy of a SIGNED 'Birthday Wishes' card to Robert Heinlein congratulating him on his 80th from President Ronald Reagan and his wife. Obviously a unique copy.

Condition: Near Fine. First American edition, unstated early printing with plain (rather than floral patterned) endpapers as per The Jerome K. Jerome Society's online bibliography. Signed by Jerome K. Jerome on the front free endpaper and inscribed to Mr. and Mrs. F. Wright Neuman "in pleasant remembrance of days in Chicago. Nov 24, 1905." [iv], 298 pp., illustrated in text by A. Frederics. Bound in publisher's dull turquoise cloth with pictorial stamping in teal and gilt lettering, plain endpapers. Light shelf wear and a few trivial indents to front boards, else Fine. An attractive copy. The renowned British humor writer Jerome K. Jerome arrived in Chicago on November 22, 1905, accompanied by his wife Georgina and the American humorist Charles Battell Loomis. Jerome was on the first of three American lecture tours he would make in his lifetime, each one a great success. In Chicago Jerome spoke at a private residence on the 23rd, then delivered a public recital at a music hall on the 24th. It is likely there that he met F. Wright Neuman, an experienced artist manager who, according to a contemporary newspaper report, managed "only the best talent." It is unsurprising that Neuman presented this particular book for a signature. Three Men in a Boat is Jerome's best and most enduring work, a comic account of an ill-fated boating trip with two friends (and a dog) that sold millions of copies worldwide in his lifetime and has never been out of print. Jerome, whose efficiency and exactitude belied his self-proclaimed status as an "idler," disliked the inconvenience of autograph requests and often refused them. Mr. and Mrs. Neuman, as professional acquaintances, clearly merited special treatment.
